GN 4-8-2 #2524 - Great Northern
Description:
Beautiful example of the 1923 Baldwin built "Mountain" type steam locomotive. According to several sources, the Class P-2 "Mountains" did an excellent job in passenger service. They were eventually replaced by the S-2 Northerns in Empire Builder service. The P-2 class locomotives were then used in freight service and were retired in 1955. These were successful passenger-haulers and were considered by many to have the best-looking Great Northern engine class. Specs - class P-2, oil burner, 73" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 29x28" cylinders, engine weight of 357,000 lb, tractive effort of 54,838 lb. Date is approximate. Robert Graham photo

Fairly nice original photo or older reprint of Wabash 4-8-2 Mountain type locomotive built by Baldwin in November of 1929. After over 30 years of service, the entire class of 25 M1 locos was scrapped between 1953-55 to make room for the more efficient diesels. Wabash #2805 met the scrapper's torch in September of 1955. Specs - serial #61154, class M1, 70" drivers, 235 psi boiler pressure, 27x32" cylinders, engine weight of 406,400 lb, tractive effort of 66,568 lb. No date or photographer was lsited for the photo so an approximate date was used.

WAB 4-8-2 #2807
Description:
When compared to some of the earlier locomotives in this album built in 1890's and early 1900's, this massive 1930 Baldwin locomotive is powerful, sophisticated and the product of years of constant research and development. This Mountain-type locomotive boasted 70" drivers and a whopping 235 psi boiler pressure but came near the end of steam. It was retired sometime between 1953-55, barely working 25 years. No known survivors of this class are known. No known location or date for this photo made by Forrest Trittenbach.

WAB 4-8-2 #2822 - Wabash RR
Description:
Beautiful sepia tinted original photo of a 12/1930 Baldwin built Mountain-type locomotive Wabash 4-8-2 #2822 (serial #61205). I left the photo in its original sepia color as it creates a warm, nostalgic portrait of this powerful loco. The class was retired in the mid 1950's with no survivors. Wabash #2822 met up with the scrapper's torch in September of 1955 after 24 years of service to the Wabash. Specifics - 70" drivers, 235 psi boiler pressure, 27x32" cylinders, engine weight of 406,400 lb and tractive effort of 66,568 lb. The date is approximate and no photographer was listed for this beautiful portrait unfortunately.

ATSF 4-8-2 # 3707 - Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe
Description:
This "Mountain"-type steam locomotive was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1919 . It was an ATSF class 3700 loco with tall 69" drivers, developed a boiler pressure of 200 psi, and created a respectable 54,085 lb of tractive effort . This was the answer to handle the increasingly longer passenger trains that the earlier 4-6-2 Pacifics couldn't do. After serving the ATSF for over 30 years, the class was retired between 1950-55. Date is approximate on this homemade photo.

GTW 4-8-2 #6037 - Grand Trunk Western
Description:
Built by Baldwin in 1925 as CN 6037, this class (U-1c) of 5 locos was the only Mountain type 4-8-2's that GTW had after CN assigned them to the Grand Trunk. Steamtown's history notes that these engines were delivered with feedwater heaters (Elesco K-39), power reverse gear, and automatic or mechanical stokers. They were the first GTW locomotives to offer both the all-weather cab and the Vanderbilt tender. The railroad soon added a trailing axle to the design, creating some relatively light 4-8-4s. This loco lasted until being sold for scrap in June of 1961. Specs - U-1c class, 73" drivers, 210 psi boiler pressure, 26x30" cylinders, engine wt 354,110 lb, tractive effort of 49,589 lb. Taken at the Elsdon Yard in Chicago by an unknown photographer.nknown photographer

GTW 4-8-2 #6037 - Grand Trunk Western
Description:
While a crew member checks the water level on the Vanderbilt tender, another checks the trailing truck while the third crew member leans out the window to check on their progress. This is a well maintained 1925 Baldwin built Mountain type 4-8-2. Only 5 were built for the GTW - some were later refitted with an additional trailing axle making it a 4-8-4. Can't quite tell if this one was converted or not. Al Paterson photo
