AHC. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide via Al Chione that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in September of 1963. The photographer is not identified. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8674 and #8675. Both are AS-18AM road switchers built by the American Locomotive Company in March of 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. In this context, they're pushing a freight train on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they'll uncouple and return to East Altoona for yet another helper/pusher run up "The Mountain." AHC. Here is an original photo that I took at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 28 September 1963. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #7131, #7252, #2204, #2205, and #2220. All were built by GM-EMD. #7131 and #7252 are EFS-17M's rated at 1,750 horsepower each. #7131 was built in 1957, but #7252 was built in 1959. #2204, #2205, and #2220 are EF-22's built in 1963 and rated at 2,250 horsepower each. They are pulling a 56-car westbound merchandise freight up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West.

AHC. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1964. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #2004 and #9714. Both were built by Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton and rated at 1,600 horsepower. #2004 was constructed in July of 1951 and retied in July of 1966, while #9714 was built in January of 1951 and also retired in July of 1966. In this context, they're pulling a mixed-cargo freight train around the Curve and down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona and points East. The photographer's name and the exact date are not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9551 is an EH-15 built in December of 1948, rebuilt later as an EF-15A, and retired in September of 1965 after just 17 years of revenue service. The photographer's name and the exact date are not recorded. Produced and distributed by the Hawk Mountain Chapter of the NRHS.

Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #2361, #2606, and another unit whose road number is not recorded. #2361 is an EF-25 built by GM-EMD inMarch of 1965 and rated at 2,500 horsepower. #2606 is a GF-25 built by General Electric as number "2506" in August of 1962, rated at 2,500 horsepower, and renumbered "2606" in preparation for the PRR-NYC merger. In this context, they're just entering the Curve with a "high-&-wide load" train that's on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. Visible at the far right is a portion of four-track Signal Bridge #2416.

All were built by GM-EMD for the Pennsylvania Railroad; their PRR road numbers were the same. #2233 is a GP-30 built in April of 1963, rated at 2,250 horsepower, and presently on display (in Conrail colors!) at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg. #6066 and #6077 are both SD-40's built in February of 1966 and rated at 3,000 horsepower each. Here, they are pulling a TrucTrain around the Curve and up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, Pittsburgh, and points West.

Penn State Classmates, 1973
Description:
AHC. Here is an original photo that I took at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, during August of 1973. Shown here are two of my Penn State-Harrisburg classmates: Twyla Jean King and Charles Ottaviano, both of Middletown, Pennsylvania. Behind them is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #1361, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata in May of 1918, retired in September of 1956 after 2,469,000 miles, enshrined at the Horseshoe Curve in June of 1957, restored for excursion service in April of 1987, withdrawn for safety reasons, disassembled for repairs, and still awaiting resuscitation.

AHC. Here is an original photo by Larry Moss that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 11 October 1976. Prominent here are AMTK engines #590 and #470-B. Both were built by GM-EMD. #590 is an SDP40F constructed in May of 1974 and rated at 3,000 horsepower. #470 is an E-9B built originally for the Union Pacific Railroad in October of 1955 and rated at 2,400 horsepower. They're rounding the Curve with a passenger train on its way down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona and points East. This photo was taken during the time when Track 2 was being removed, hence the presence of the maintenance-of-way equipment parked there.

AHC. Here is an original 35mm color slide by an unidentified photographer that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in November of 1977. At the left is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #1361, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during May of 1918, retired in September of 1956, enshrined at the Horseshoe Curve on 08 June 1957, and restored for excursion service during 1987-1988. Meanwhile, at the right, a three-unit Conrail TOFC train rounds the Curve on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West.

AHC. Here is an original 35mm color slide by an unidentified photographer that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in November of 1977. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad cabin car #980901, an N-6B built in the Altoona Car Shops during August of 1916. It was enshrined at the Curve in early 1964 to remember and honor the many thousands of men and women who labored in the Altoona Works for more than a century. Vandals set it afire in late 1977 ~ but instead of restoring it, the City of Altoona had it towed away and scrapped. What vandals started, bureaucrats finished: destruction of our railroad and cultural history. Alas....
