Aside from the copy maker's name there was no information on the slide. Thanks to Gary Hart in the comments for filling in the correct year (1956), photographer (Clerence Cade), copy maker (W. B. Folsom), and location (Columbus, GA). It would be nice to get the story on the saddle tank to the Centipede's side, or for any part of this photo really. The date (aside from the year) is approximate. From the Ralph L. Phillips collection of the Bay State Model Railroad Museum.

In this context, they're passing under the Riggle's Gap Bridge with a mixed-cargo freight train on its way from Altoona to Enola. Prominent here (L to R) is PRR engine #5814 and another "Centipede" whose road number is not recorded. BYC. Here is the first of two duplicate 35mm color slides of photos by Fred Kern that were taken just West of the Brick Yard Crossing in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 23 July 1955. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #5814 and #5824. Both are BH-50's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as BP-60's rated at 3,000 horsepower each, but later regeared and classified as BH-50's rated at 2,500 horsepower each. #5814 was constructed in September of 1947 and retired in April of 1962, while #5824 was built in May of 1947 and retired in April of 1962. In this context, they're serving as "pushers" on a mixed-cargo freight train heading up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin, where they'll uncouple and return to East Altoona for yet another helper/pusher run up "The Mountain." Here is page one of a two-page article entitled "Baldwin Centipede Production Model, Pennsylvania RR Class BP-1 3000 HP." Drawings by Craig Bossler. It was published originally in the February 1967 issue of "Railroad Model Craftsman" magazine, page 34. Middle Photo Caption: "May 1964 photo by Tom Smith at Hollidaysburg, Pa., shows half the PRR Centipede fleet. Not one sample of these huge locomotives were saved." #5814 is a BH-50 built by Baldwin as a passenger service 3,000 horsepower BP-60 in September of 1947, later regeared to a helper service 2,500 horsepower BH-50, and retired in April of 1962.

In this context, they've been prepared for movement to the Recycling Center. Partially visible in the distance is the East Altoona Coaling Tipple.

After many years as a fireman and engineman on the Pennsylvania Railroad's Middle Division, he finished his career as a hostler at the East Altoona Roundhouse. Description:
Centipedes. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad "Centipede" locomotive in Altoona, Pennsylvania, during the Summer of 1960. Shown here is PRR engine #5820 built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1948. Standing in front of it is Mr. Ken Sellers ~ a long-time resident of Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, who worked as a hostler for the PRR. Mr. Sellers was kind enough to give me an unofficial, inside look at several Diesel units stored next to the Roundhouse in East Altoona ~ including #5820. This engine was built originally for passenger service; it generated 3,000 horsepower, and so was classified as a BP-60. Due to various chronic problems, however, it was converted to helper-only duty by 1952; it generated only 2,500 horsepower then, and so was reclassified as a BH-50.

Here is a photo taken by Bob Lorenz that was published in David W. Seidel's 2008 book entitled "Images Of Rail: Horseshoe Curve," page 39. Partial Caption: "Descending the east slope at Horseshoe Curve is a Baldwin Class BP-60 locomotive set led by No. 5823 powering an eastbound passenger train.
