PRR 5820, BH-50, 1952 |
Description: |
Dziobko. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by John Dziobko, Jr., that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 25 July 1952. Shown here (L to R) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5820 and another "Centipede" whose road number is not recorded. Both are BH-50's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as BP-60's rated at 3,000 horsepower each, but later regeared and classified as BH-50's rated at 2,500 horsepower each. #5820 was constructed in February of 1948 and retired in April of 1962 after just 14 years of revenue service. Photo taken from Juniata's 8th Street Bridge. |

PRR 4335, I-1SA, 1959 |
Description: |
Volkmer. Here is an original 35mm color slide by William D. Volkmer that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 29 October 1959. Prominent here (R to L) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #4335 and three more locomotives whose road numbers are not recorded. #4335 is an I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapod" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an I-1S during December of 1922, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in January of 1943, and retired in October of 1959 after 37 years of faithful service. In this context, they've been prepared for movement to the Recycling Center. Partially visible in the distance is the East Altoona Coaling Tipple. |

Mr. Ken Sellers, 1960 |
Description: |
PRR Men. Here is a photo of Ken Sellers. After many years as a fireman and engineman on the Pennsylvania Railroad's Middle Division, he finished his career as a hostler at the East Altoona Roundhouse. He's shown here in August of 1960 with PRR engine #5820 that was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as a 3,000 horsepower BP-60 for passenger service in February of 1948, later regeared and downgraded to a 2,500 horsepower BP-50 for freight and helper service, and retired in April of 1962 after just 14 years of revenue service. |

PRR 5820, BH-50, 1960 |
Description: |
Centipedes. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad "Centipede" locomotive in Altoona, Pennsylvania, during the Summer of 1960. Shown here is PRR engine #5820 built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1948. Standing in front of it is Mr. Ken Sellers ~ a long-time resident of Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, who worked as a hostler for the PRR. Mr. Sellers was kind enough to give me an unofficial, inside look at several Diesel units stored next to the Roundhouse in East Altoona ~ including #5820. This engine was built originally for passenger service; it generated 3,000 horsepower, and so was classified as a BP-60. Due to various chronic problems, however, it was converted to helper-only duty by 1952; it generated only 2,500 horsepower then, and so was reclassified as a BH-50. |
