PRR GG1 4846
Description:
PRR half GG1 (perhaps it's a G1) 4846 at Wilmington, Delaware, on an unknown day in April 1979, photo by Chuck Zeiler. I happened upon this while passing through Wilmington on a business trip. It appears to have a duct directed towards the track at the rear of the unit, suggesting that perhaps it was used to clear snow in the yard. Although this is in the Conrail timeframe, it is unlikely this unit was on the CR roster. One source indicates that this was once #4846.

PRR GG1 4846
Description:
Former PRR GG1 4846 at the shops, Wilmington, Delaware on an unknown day in April 1979, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. I'm not sure what this was, sometimes you shoot first and ask questions later. I failed to ask the obvious question after shooting this photo, so here's my best guess: There appears to be a duct pointing toward the track, I would suppose that it was to clear the track of snow. One source indicates that this was once #4846 and that it was converted to a snowblower for the Wilmington Shops.

PRR E8 5795
Description:
Pennsylvania Railroad E8 5795 at 47th Street in Chicago, Illinois on May 9, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The lead locomotive was built in June 1952 (c/n 15660) on EMD Order 6354, class EP-22 (Electro-motive Passenger 22 hundred horsepower) on the!PRR. Just as interesting is the train, and here's my best guess, based on my knowledge of where I was when I shot the photo.I was standing on the platform of the 47th Street Station in Chicago, which was all but abandon at the time. This train rolled by northbound (timetable westbound) at about 4:00 PM. That being the case, this MIGHT be Train 3-71, due at Englewood at 4:00 PM and Union Station at 4:15 PM, according to the June 1965 issue of the Official Guide. Note that there is a coach in the middle of the consist, suggesting that this may be two trains combined. Train #3 originated in Norfolk at 1:05 PM on the N&W, which arrived in Cincinnati at 6:55 AM. It appears that Train 71 originated in Pittsburgh, arriving in Cincinnati, and was combined with #3 , leaving 8:25 AM. Train 3-71 arrived in Richmond at 9:33 AM and departed at 10:35 AM. There must have been some sort of switching at Richmond, the notes indicate the following (verbatim):Number 71 Daily Sleeping car Roanoke to Cincinnati (10 Roomettes 6 Double Bedrooms) (in N&W No. 3). Dining Car (Lounge) on N&W Ry. open late afternoon and evening. Coaches Norfolk to Cincinnati. Cincinnati to Chicago. Coach Lunch Served between Norwood and Logansport. Another note indicates that Train 3-71 has a Lounge (Bar) Pittsburgh to Richmond (6 Double Bedrooms). (En route from New York to Indianapolis in No. 3) Dining Car ....Pittsburgh to Richmond Coaches .... Pittsburgh to Richmond Richmond to Chicago.

PRR E8 5802
Description:
PRR E8 5802 westbound departing Englewood Union Station on the south side of Chicago, Illinois on April 11, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in July 1952 (c/n 15666) on EMD Order 6354, later it became PC 4281, then Amtrak 289. It has just left Englewood (Rock Island's platform shed is seen to the left of the locomotive) and will arrive at Chicago's Union Station in about 15 minutes. I believe this to be combined Train Number 3-71, according to the June 1965 Offical Guide. The PRR Employes Timetable No. 2 in effect April 25, 1965 shows it as Train #71. Train #3 was a Pittsburgh to Cincinnati train, Train #71 originated on the N&W and arrived in Cincinnati, was combined with #3, and was a stop-everywhere train all the way to Chicago. Timetable #2 shows (page 48-49) that this train had a lot of U.S. Mail Work scheduled at almost every stop, with the Note E; Train Stops, Mail Received or Delivered, Or Both, or Note CD; Mail Caught And Delivered.

PRR E8 5837
Description:
Pennsylvania Railroad E8 5837 coming to a scheduled station stop eastbound at Englewood Union Station on the south side of Chicago, Illinois on April 11, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in February 1951 (c/n 13106) on EMD Order 6181A. I failed to note which train this was. Based on the June 1965 edition of The Official Guide, this might be either Train # 48, The General, or Train # 28, The Broadway Limited. The General was due at Englewood at 3:28 PM and The Broadway Limited was due at 4:13 PM.

Based on my fading memory, this is between 4:00 PM and 5:00 PM, so this could be either Train #48, The General, due out of Union Station at 4:15 PM, or it might be Train #28, The Broadway Limited, due out at 5:00 PM.

PRR DS-4-4-1000 9275
Description:
PRR DS-4-4-1000 9275 somewhere in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, circa June 1965, photo by R. S. Short, Chuck Zeiler collection. Built in January, 1949 (c/n 73888), Baldwin built two versions of the DS-4-4-1000, the successor to the VO-1000. The first version was powered by a normally-aspired 608NA eight-cylinder diesel, and the second version was powered by the 606SC six-cylinder Elliot turbocharged diesel. The spotting feature is four exhaust stacks for the 608NA, and a single stack for the 606SC.

PRR SW7 9360
Description:
PRR SW7 9360 at Englewood ( Chicago ), Illinois on April 11, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in June 1950 (c/n 10433) on EMD Order 4031, it was apparently renumbered PRR 9068 (2nd), later PC 9086, then CR 9086, then scrapped at Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. I'll bet the Englewood tower guy was happy about clearing two trains across the Rock Island at the same time.

PRR DR-4-4-1500 9570
Description:
PRR DR-4-4-1500 9570 across from EMD at La Grange, Illinois on November 15, 1964, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in March 1949 (c/n 73701), one of 34 DR-4-4-1500 "Sharknose" A units numbered in the 9568A - 9593A and 9700A - 9707A number series. Previous to the PRR order, Baldwin's DR-4-4-1500 was delivered in the "baby face" carbody style. The PRR's initial order of 26 A-units and 26 B-units were delivered in 1949, and a follow-up order for eight A-B sets was placed in 1949 for 1950 delivery. These last eight units introduced yet another refinement; the cab was moved one foot forward, with a corresponding reduction in the length of the nose. Number 9570 is seen here on its last mile, on the Pielet Brothers setout track across the IHB main from EMD's plant in La Grange.

PRR X29 9704
Description:
PRR X29 9704 at Jeffersonville, Indiana on April 2, 1985, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This is an example of one of the tens of thousands class X29 boxcars built by the PRR and outside suppliers. This shows the as built (November 1929) flat ends. It has two reporting marks peeking through the paint; PRR 9704 and PC 37753. The PRR number is rather low by PRR standards, suggesting it may have once been an express car. It would have been built with a three panel Creco door, likely acquiring this door during a shopping. It is stenciled: BLT 11-29. It is likely riding on PRR's 2DF4 trucks.

PRR X29 9704
Description:
PRR X29 9704 (or, PC 37753) at Jeffersonville, Indiana on April 8, 1985, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in November 1929, this is an example of an X29 as-built with flat ends. It is in sand service (yellow S, and stenciled to the right of the door: ENGINE SAND ONLY). To the left of the reporting marks it is also stenciled: WHEN EMPTY RETURN TO PC AGENT STORES DEPT BEECH GROVE. When in sand service, typically there were two bunkers in the car, one at each end, roof hatches to fill the bunkers with sand, and pneumatic hoses to discharge the sand located behind the doors. At one time there were over 30,000 X29's (all variations).
