PRR X29 9704
PRR X29 9704 (or, PC 37753) at Jeffersonville, Indiana on April 8, 1985, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in November 1929, this is an example of an X29 as-built with flat ends. It is in sand service (yellow S, and stenciled to the right of the door: ENGINE SAND ONLY). To the left of the reporting marks it is also stenciled: WHEN EMPTY RETURN TO PC AGENT STORES DEPT BEECH GROVE. When in sand service, typically there were two bunkers in the car, one at each end, roof hatches to fill the bunkers with sand, and pneumatic hoses to discharge the sand located behind the doors. At one time there were over 30,000 X29's (all variations).

Alan Fricker General A real treat to find one of these so late in its career! I think you're right about the three panel Creco door, too. 1/6/2012 11:23:13 AM
