GM&O GP38-2 748 |
Description: |
When the Gulf Mobile & Ohio merged with the Illinois Central on 10 August 1972, the regular use of the former railroad's CANAL YARD in New Orleans was largely discontinued; but in this view about a month later GP38-2 748 was ready to head north with three hopper cars and a caboose. The elevated track on the right was the scale and the building next to it was the yard office; while the bridge in the distance is the I-10 HIGH RISE over the Industrial Canal, which is off to the right. ICG No. 33 |
Description: |
On 10 August 1972, the day of the Illinois Central-Gulf Mobile & Ohio merger, the ICG discontinued the regular operation of former GM&O trains 32 and 33 between Bogalusa and New Orleans; but the trains continued to run occasionally to serve a customer at the south end of the former GM&O Canal Yard. In this view taken shortly after the merger, No. 33 was entering the main line of the Southern Railway just south of the Slidell depot, to continue its trip to New Orleans. The roof of the depot can be seen right behind the loco. This ICG trainman had previously lined the spring switch (SS) for the siding, to comply with the "Five-Minute-Rule" and once the time was up he threw it again just as his train was about to enter the main line. Setting the switch for the siding five minutes before the train entered the main line made nearby signals go red, and this prevented mainline trains from colliding with No. 33. We know this was shortly after the ICG merger because the train was short and it wasn't running extra. Once Nos. 32 and 33 were removed from the Southern timetable, these occasional trains would have to run as extras. (approximate date) |

Former GM&O Buildings |
Description: |
The photographer was standing on the Illinois Central Gulf main line, facing north, about three blocks south of the former New Orleans-Great Northern depot in Bogalusa, Louisiana. The buildings on the left of the tracks were a couple of sheds, the storeroom, and the diesel shop. The GP38 in the distance was parked next to the diesel shop and across from the depot. The large open area on the other side of these buildings had been the site of the NOGN-GM&N-GM&O locomotive shop and roundhouse. (approximate date) |

Southern No. 58 |
Description: |
A late-running Southern Railway No. 58, the New Orleans-Meridian local, was entering the siding at Slidell during a very unusual south Louisiana snowfall. The train was running with GP38 2796 and GP30 2528, and was here to meet piggyback train No. 219. The track on the other side of the 2796 was the south leg of the Slidell wye. The wye's tail track served the American Creosote Works plant, which later became an EPA Superfund site. The wye was subsequently removed. |

ICG Shore Line Local |
Description: |
Former Gulf Mobile & Ohio GP35 639 was powering the Illinois Central Gulf's Shore Line Local through Mandeville, Louisiana; on its way from Covington to Bogalusa. The train had just crossed U.S. Highway 190 and was now turning east towards Slidell, where it would turn north again and head up the former GM&O main line to Bogalusa. The whistle post next to those red and black CZCX (Crown Zellerbach Corporation) pulpwood cars was for Carroll Street. After the branch was abandoned in 1991 most of the right of way became the Tammany Trace trail. (approximate date) |

IC(G) GP9 9201 |
Description: |
The Illinois Central bought 26 GP9's equipped for passenger service, and all were built with a 62:15 (65 MPH) gear ratio; but this was one of four units (9200-9203) modified with high-speed 59:18 (85 MPH) gearing for use on the Chicago-Omaha line. By the time the 9201 was photographed deep in Gulf Mobile & Ohio territory - across from the Bogalusa depot - its high-speed days were long over. It was subsequently rebuilt in May 1979 as Ashley Drew & Northern GP10 1811. (approximate day) |

NOUPT |
Description: |
This view of New Orleans Passenger Terminal SW8 number 3 in 1974 was an image of contrasts. To the left of the engine, covered by arches, was the terminal's unused 8-track post office annex; while on the left was Railway Express Agency, no longer served by rail and occupied by a few REA trucks. Elsewhere, the image illustrated the buildings which began altering the city's skyline over the previous 10 years. The tall building just to the left of the switcher is the 14-story office tower which had been completed in 1964 as a part of the city$s new main post office. To left left of this, in the background, is the building at number 2 Canal Street, next to the Mississippi River. This 33-story structure was completed in 1967 as the city's first skyscraper. On the very left is the 45-story Plaza Tower, completed in 1969 as the city's second skyscraper and located right across the street for the railroad station. On the left is the 51-story One Shell Square, opened in 1972 and still the tallest building in the city. In the 40-plus years since this photo was taken, the skyline has been filled with an assortment of other tall structures. (approximate date) |

Southern Railway Train No. 194 |
Description: |
Southern Railway train No. 194 was heading north through Slidell, Louisiana behind Southern Pacific U33C 8782, SD45T-2 9190 and a third SP unit. This run-through train between Houston and Birmingham was just south of the Slidell station, and the track in the foreground was the south leg of the wye that had served a creosote plant along nearby Bayou Bonfouca. A creosote plant was first built here in 1892 to treat wood for the New Orleans & Northeastern Railroad’s trestle across Lake Pontchartrain. The plant closed in 1970 and the area was subsequently designated as an EPA Superfund site. After the creosote-contaminated soil was incinerated and the wye was removed, a 54-acre area west of the railroad station which once included the wye and the creosote plant was redeveloped by the city as HERITAGE PARK. Illinois Central geeps 9054, 9313 and 3003 were backing onto their southbound train (on the left) after having run down to the Hammond depot to exchange some paperwork with the agent. The trainman next to the middle unit would throw the switch for the line to Baton Rouge as soon as the engines pass. The passenger cars on the left belonged to the Southeast Louisiana Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society, while the geep on the right was the Hammond Switcher. This photo was taken about 20 months after the IC-GM&O merger, but this still looked just like the IC! (approximate date) |
