CB&Q E9 9991
Title:  CB&Q E9 9991
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad EE9 9991 westbound at Naperville, Illinois on March 9, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. A baggage car was unusual for a Dinky (commuter train). In this case, the baggage car was added to deliver newspaper supplements to various news agencies along the Burlington. Usually this happened on a Wednesday or Thursday. One of my first employment opportunities in Naperville was as a newspaper boy, and part of my job was to stuff the Sunday newpapers with these supplements, generally the advertising pages, magazines, and the funny papers.

CB&Q E9 9991
Title:  CB&Q E9 9991
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9991 heading an eastbound Dinky at Naperville on Illinois, April 19, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built as CB&Q E9 9991 ( c/n 19630 on EMD Order 2065 ) it became BN 9991 on 3/2/70. Sold to the West Suburban Mass Transit District ( WSMTD ) 8/18/72, rebuilt to E9-Au by Morrison Knudsen 5/73, returned to WSMTD as 9921 and leased to the BN.

Note the last porthole window is painted silver. The EMD on-board toilet was at this location, so this may have been a privacy issue. My best guess is that a crew man was dealing with the call of nature and happened to be caught in the process by a passing passenger train, probably while both trains were stopped in a station. The Burlington took their passenger complaints very seriously. I was also informed that it was no pleasure for shop crews to change the brake shoes on the trailing truck at the location of the toilet discharge pipe.

Title:  CB&Q E9 9991
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9991 on Train 21, the Morning Zephyr, aka the Twin Cities Zephyr, at Aurora, Illinois on September 26, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This train will need to clear the circuit before my train can arrive. I got up early to catch a Dinky from Naperville to Aurora so I could ride a railfans special to West Burlington to see 4-8-4 5632 being overhauled, a job never completed. My train was pulled by a pair of E9's, we (the railfans) hoped it would be 2-8-2 4960. Somewhere I still have my Menk The Fink button, worn by many fans on the trip to express displeasure with the new CB&Q president Louis Menk's decision to discontinue the steam program, and 5632 was sold mid-overhaul to Dick Jensen and ultimately scrapped.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9973 and E9 9992 at Naperville, Illinois on August 11, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. On the left 9973 was bringing a Dinky to a station stop at Naperville, and on the right 9992 was passing with Train Number 1, the Denver Zephyr, on the first 28 miles of its overnight run to Denver 1034 miles west of Union Station in Chicago. Hard to believe, but this was a daily occurrence at 6:30 PM in Naperville during the 1960's.

Title:  CB&Q E9 9992
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9992 backing into the station at Saint Paul, Minnesota on February 5, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. I have the slide labeled as Train 21, the Morning Zephyr. If that is correct, then this train is arriving at St. Paul. Train 21 left Chicago at 8:00 AM CST every day, arriving at St. Paul at 2:25 PM. This locomotive became BN 9992 on March 2, 1970. Around May 1973, 9992 was rebuilt by Morrison Knudsen in Boise Idaho, the 12-cylinder Model 567 prime movers were replaced with 12-cylinder Model 645's, the steam generators were replaced with twin Cummins 350Kw generators for Head End Power (HEP), and it returned to BN rails now owned by the West Suburban Mass Transit District as E9-Au 9922, and was leased back to the BN. It ran in commuter service until July 1992.

CB&Q E9 9993
Title:  CB&Q E9 9993
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9993 westbound at Naperville, Illinois on April 28, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The CB&Q Employees Timetable No. 10 had just gone into effect on Sunday, April 25, 1965, as had Daylight Savings Time, giving me the opportunity to capture the Dinkys in better light. I walked east about two miles from Naperville toward Lisle, and started back, photographing each Dinky as it passed by. Starting around 3:00 PM and continuing until around 7:00 PM, the Burlington would dispatch about 17 Dinkys, the California Zephyr, and the Denver Zephyr past this spot, and a few eastbound trains would also pass by, but the light was not right for eastbound photography. My goal was to photograph two westbound Dinkys side by side at 60 mph, which sometimes happened here if one or the other was slightly off schedule.

Title:  CB&Q E9 9993
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9993 westbound on Train #25, the North Coast Limited, at Eola Illinois on January 1, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 9993 was built during August 1954 (c/n 19632) on EMD Order 2065A for 6 E9's (9990-9995), and after March 2, 1970 it became BN 9993. It was sold to the West Suburban Mass Transit District on August 18, 1972, sent to Morrison Knudsen in Boise, Idaho for rebuilding into a E9Am (or E9Au, I'm not sure), returning to BN rails as 9923 after July 1973. Note that the second unit has three red stripes, unique to the CB&Q E7's with small numberboards, the last unit is an E7 with the large numberboards and four red stripes.

CB&Q E9 9995
Title:  CB&Q E9 9995
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9995 westbound at Naperville, Illinois on March 10, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Baggage cars were not typically part of the consist of the Dinkys (commuter trains) on the CB&Q. Growing up in Naperville, I was once a paperboy, and had first hand knowledge of the purpose of the baggage cars. The Sunday supplements (the funnies, magazine section, and advertising inserts) were printed ahead of time, and sent to the local news agencies for insertion into the Sunday paper usually on Saturday evening. One of my jobs as a paperboy was to go to the Naperville station and collect the supplements which generally arrived on a Wednesday or Thursday. If there were a lot of supplements, usually around holidays, the Burlington would have to add a baggage car to handle the load. There was a minor problem with this, from my point of view. As the train arrived, the baggage handler would open the door and when he saw the platform, he began kicking out the bundles of supplements before the train stopped. At first I thought the guy was just a jerk, but I later found out that this was to prevent delay of the train. If the train was delayed, the conductor would have to fill out a Delay Report, which he would rather not do. If the wire binding did not hold the bundles together as they were kicked out, the paperboy (me) would have to go along the right-of-way and collect all the loose supplements.

Title:  CB&Q E9 9995
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9995 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on April 19, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in August 1954 (c/n 1;634) on EMD Order 2065A for six E9's (#'s 9990-9995), this was the highest numbered E9, and for that matter, the highest numbered locomotive on the CB&Q diesel roster. It was not the last E9 delivered/ the following year the CB&Q ordered 10 more E9's (#'s 9985A-B through 9989A-B), the CB&Q's final passenger locomotive acquisition. This one went on to become BN 9995 and after rebuilding by Morrison-Knudsen became BN 9925, retired from Chicago commuter service in 1992. Seen here in charge of one of the daily CB&Q Dinkys (commuter train), it has in tow five of the single level coaches, a pair of Budd bi-level stainless steel coaches, and a power car converted from one of the single level coaches. Within a few years, all the single level coaches would be retired, the power cars would survive a few more years to power solid trains of bi-level Budd coaches until 26 E8's and E9's were rebuilt by M-K with Head End Power.

Title:  CB&Q E9 9995
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9995 westbound at Naperville, Illinois on April 26, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Although this locomotive was the highest numbered E9 on the CB&Q's diesel roster, it was not the last one delivered. The Burlington psaced it final passenger locomotive order in late 1955 for 10 more E9's, and since these units would not fit above 9995, they were numbered in a slot reserved for the FW&D, 9985A-B to 9989A-B.

CB&Q #9995
Title:  CB&Q #9995
Description:  CB&Q E9A #9995, an E8A or E9A, and a GN F Unit, are the power for an unknown passenger train either in the years right before, or sometime right after, the BN merger. This could very well be the EMPIRE BUILDER, as all the cars visible are GN: 2 streamlined heavyweight baggage express cars (1st in Big Sky'Blue, 2nd in Green & Orange), a lightweight baggage-express (in Green & Orange), and what appears to be a "long distance" 48 seat leg rest chair, also in BSB. Scanned with an Epson V550 from a duplicate 35mm slide, brand is unknown. Photographer is unknown; date, month, and year are approximate.

CB&Q 9995 and Three Sisters Elephant Style in 1970
Title:  CB&Q 9995 and Three Sisters Elephant Style in 1970
Description:  Four E units elephant style was a rare site even when E units were bountiful. E9A 9995 in CB&Q colors leads the group and BN's combined Afternoon Zephyr, North Coast Limited, and Empire Builder west through West Eola, Illinois (almost to Aurora) on August 31, 1970 with nine dome cars. Trains like this is why they called the CB&Q commuter trains "dinkys."

Note the wave from the friendly engineer. Scanned with an Epson V550 from a dJplicate 35mm slide, brand is unknown. Photographer is unknown; date, month, and year are approximate.
