Yard Office/Station |
Description: |
Powers is located along the former Chicago and Northwestern line between Menominee,MI and Escanaba, MI. It is the location of a junction that the C&NW used to branch off a line that at one time went on to Ashland WI. This branch now ends at Iron Mountain, but does not appear to get much use past Quinnesec. At Quinnesec, the CN services a large Verso facility. An interesting detail on this building is the silhouette of the old C&NW ball and bar sign on the upper right hand corner of the gable end. |

A closer look at some of the front details of the 2120. It was being used to power the local when this image was taken. Interesting note is the amount of water the crew has for supply in the cab. |

Left oblique shot of the 2120 in Powers, MI. Though the big GE's always sounded a bit ratchety to me, I have always thought they looked extremely tough. |

The junction at Hermansville. |
Description: |
Looking back generally east toward Powers on the former C&NW line. The track diverging foreground right connects to the former Soo Line grade that ran across northern Wisconsin from St. Paul/Minneapolis to Sault Saint Marie. From this end, the CN runs it as a branch as far as Goodman. The C&NW track is used to Quinnesec, MI. This was once the location of an at grade crossing of the Soo and C&NW. Now the so track that continued on to SSM is a recreational trail. Satellite images show Hermansville once had a fair amount of rail served industries, but that the connections have been severed, or the spurs removed. i |

Former Milwaukee Road Depot |
Description: |
Now part of the Escanaba and Lake Superior since the Milwaukee Road sold this line off 1980, the old depot looks to be in good shape, though a bit disused. Iron Mountain was once a center of railroad activity with the Chicago and Northwestern, Milwaukee Road and the Wisconsin and Michigan all working the area. This view is of the northwest corner. |

A look at the southeast corner of the old Milwaukee Road depot. This nice masonry structure seems to be in decent shape, and the fact the train order signal is still there is outstanding to see. Souvenir hunters and vandals, please stay away. |
