Description:
Here is a postal card entitled "New York-Chicago Flyer.'" No Postmark. Front Caption: "The P.R.R. New York-Chicago Flyer. (The 18-hour train)." Nonetheless, the lettering on the Combine indicates that this is actually "The Pennsylvania Special." It's powered by Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6018, a D-16B (4-4-0) "American" built in Juniata as number "5201" during August of 1907, sent to the West Jersey & Seashore Railroad and renumbered "6018" in July of 1917, and retired in July of 1927 after 20 years of faithful service. The photographer's name, the exact date, and the location are not recorded.

Revised Caption On Reverse: "From Tide Water to the [Ohio] Valley was the course of the trader, warrior, and eventually commerce. The unusual views shown on this card indicate the evolution of the methods of transportation that have been used during three centuries. Copyright 1908 by Geo. V. Miller & Co." PRR "Logan House," c. 1908
Description:
Here is a postal card entitled "Logan House, Altoona, Pa." No Postmark. This structure was built by the Pennsylvania Railroad for the comfort and convenience of the many passengers who passed through Altoona. This was also the site of the Loyal War Governors' Conference, 24-25 September 1862. During this Conference, the governors of 14 Northern States not only reaffirmed their support to pursue the War of Succession, but also voiced support for President Lincoln's "Emancipation Proclamation." Located on 11th Avenue between 12th & 13th Streets, it was demolished after the Second World War to make room for the new Post Office Building.

This structure was built by the Pennsylvania Railroad for the instruction and technical guidance of the men who designed the locomotives and rolling stock that the Pennsy built in Altoona. Located on 11th Avenue between 12th & 13th Streets, it was in its day one of the foremost engineering and materials libraries in the world.

This structure spans the Pennsylvania Railroad's east and west passenger tracks (far side), temporary storage tracks for passenger cars (in the center), as well as both local and Altoona Yard lead tracks (near side). Partially visible at the far right (across the tracks) are some of the PRR's Passenger Car Shops. Note the horse-drawn wagons crossing the Bridge, along with two green-colored streetcars!

Here is a postal card entitled "A Heavy Grade Near Summit on the Tyrone Div., Pennsylvania R.R. '45 Cars & 5 Engines.'" Photo by Mr. William H. Rau. Postmarked: 4 July 1909. Caption On Reverse: "The conquest of the Allegheny Mountains has been a problem for engineering skill. A heavily-loaded train, as shown in the picture, still requires an immense amount of motive power." Actually, this phouo was taken along the eastbound mainline tracks between Cresson and Gallitzin. It's on the Pittsburgh Division, therefore, not the Tyrone Division as indicated on the postal card.

Here is a postal card entitled "View of Twelfth Street Shops, Altoona, Pa." No Postmark. Visible in the center is the 12th Street Footbridge, built of cast iron during April of 1863 and lasting until December of 1965. The Logan House and the Passenger Station were located just beyond the right end of the Bridge. The structure at the far left ~ the one with the floor-to-ceiling windows ~ still exists, but is now owned by the Altoona Pipe & Steel Company. Alas, all the rest has been demolished. . . .

PRR "Bridge and Machine Shop," 1917
Description:
Here is a postal card entitled "12th St. from 11th Ave., showing Bridge and Machine Shop, Altoona, Pa." Postmarked: 15 February 1917. Among other things, the Altoona Machine Shops produced 2,289 steam locomotives and tenders in the 38 years from the time it first opened in December of 1866 until it ceased production in January of 1904. The Civil War-era, wrought-iron, 12th Street Footbridge was replaced in December of 1965! The artist's name is not recorded.

Among other things, the Juniata Shops produced 4,584 steam and electric locomotives in the 55 years from the time they first opened in July of 1891 until they ceased production in June of 1946. That's Chestnut Avenue in the foreground, while portions of the Altoona Yards are visible behind the Shop buildings. Produced and distributed by I. & M. Ottenheimer of Baltimore, Maryland, c. 1917.

Here is a postal card entitled "South Altoona Shops, Altoona, Pa." No Postmark. Among other things, the Brass Foundry situated here produced all of the PRR's brass friction bearings and locomotive bells. In later years, a coal-fired electric power plant was built here; it supplied the electricity for all of the Altoona Works. That's the Sixth Avenue Road in the foreground, not visible behind the Shop buildings is the branch line between Hollidaysburg (to the left) and Altoona (to the right), while the imposing Allegheny Mountains are barely visible in the distance. Caption On Reverse: "Type K-4s Passenger Locomotive." #1737 is a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during May of 1914, renumbered "3750" in 1956, and retired in February of 1960 after 46 years of faithful service. Here is a postal card entitled "12th Street from 11th Avenue, showing Bridge and Machine Shop, by night, Altoona, Pa." Postmarked: 15 August 1931. Among other things, the Altoona Machine Shops produced 2,289 steam locomotives and tenders in the 38 years from the time it first opened in December of 1866 until it ceased production in January of 1904. The Civil War-era, wrought-iron, 12th Street Footbridge was replaced in December of 1965! The artist's name is not recorded.
