Here is a postal card entitled "A Heavy Grade Near Summit on the Tyrone Div., Pennsylvania R.R. '45 Cars & 5 Engines.'" Photo by Mr. William H. Rau. Postmarked: 4 July 1909. Caption On Reverse: "The conquest of the Allegheny Mountains has been a problem for engineering skill. A heavily-loaded train, as shown in the picture, still requires an immense amount of motive power." Actually, this phouo was taken along the eastbound mainline tracks between Cresson and Gallitzin. It's on the Pittsburgh Division, therefore, not the Tyrone Division as indicated on the postal card. |
