Partial Caption: "The PRR acquired its first diesel-electric locomotive as early as June 1937, but dieselization did not arrive until after World War II. Baldwin model RF-16 No. 2008, built in the 1950-1952 period, enters Horseshoe Curve." Engine #2008 is a BF-16 built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in October of 1951, rated at 1,600 HP, and retired in July of 1966. |

Here is a photo taken by Bob Lorenz that was published in David W. Seidel's 2008 book entitled "Images Of Rail: Horseshoe Curve," page 39. Partial Caption: "Descending the east slope at Horseshoe Curve is a Baldwin Class BP-60 locomotive set led by No. 5823 powering an eastbound passenger train. These units, at 6,000 horsepower, were initially in passenger service but were later downgraded for freight service [at] only 5,000 horsepower." In this context, Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5823 is a BP-60 built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in March of 1947 and retired in September of 1962 after just 15 years of revenue service. |

Partial Caption: "During June 1962, the PRR operated new General Electric U-25B diesel-electric locomotives 2500, 2508, and 2502 over Horseshoe Curve. Rated at 2,500 horsepower, they are equipped with train-phones and dual controls. Railroaders dubbed them 'U-Boats.'" Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #2500, #2508, and #2502. All were built by General Electric in 1962: #2500 and #2502 were built in August, but #2508 was built in September. Barely visible in the distance is PRR K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" #1361. |
