Description:  CN local crosses Washington St. after servicing Chemtrade (formerly General Chemical Corp.) via former C&NW rails on Doty Island at Menasha, WI on 17 Nov. '17. The awesome, old building at left is currently home to Expert Driveline Truck & Auto Repair, 216 Washington St. Built in '35 for Verbrick's Service Co., Norbert F. Verbrick, proprietor; it operated as such until '84. Designed by Henry Auler in the Tudor Revival style, it and the adjacent building at 214 Washington St. (originally offices of Northwest Electrolyte and Engraving, also designed by Auler in the Tudor Revival style), partially visible above the rear of the locomotive, were erected on what had long been a stave yard for the Menasha Wooden Ware Co., currently known as Menasha Corp. When the building was constructed in '35, then Washington Ave. was also Hwy. 41.

Re-installed Grade Crossing at New London, WI
Title:  Re-installed Grade Crossing at New London, WI
Description:  CN recently re-installed the grade crossing on a remnant of the former GB&W mainline in order to resume rail service to Granite Valley Forest Products (formerly Wolf River Lumber) at New London, WI, as seen on 29 Nov. '17. Wolf River Lumber eliminated rail service ca. '09 and the grade crossing was removed. I'm not sure if rail service has resumed yet or not. Wolf River Lumber ran into some financial and legal trouble and was acquired by GreenStone Farm Credit Services in '10. GreenStone wanted to keep it running until they found a buyer. Welter Forest Products, Inc. (DBA Granite Valley Forest Products) bought it in late '12 or early '13.

CN 4721
Title:  CN 4721
Description:  CN local works in the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 4 Dec. '17. The facility at right is currently home to Alliance Industries, 320 Appleton St., Menasha, WI, they apply powder coatings and manufacture sand cores. Founded at Waupaca, WI in 1979, they leased this facility in 2005. They later purchased the facility as well as the adjacent one at 313 Appleton St. The facility was home to Menasha Mill Supply Co. from at least 1939 through the 1970s, they primarily processed waste paper. It clearly used to receive rail service, but it does not seem to currently. The former MILW yard was located on the other (south) side of it; the building could be serviced by both railroads simultaneously.

Title:  CN 2221, CN 2576, CN 2833
Description:  CN unit train of tank cars parallels Broad St. and approaches E. Parkway Ave. (and an awesome relic of the line's historic owner) as it heads north via former C&NW rails at Oshkosh, WI on 9 Dec. '17. I've passed this grade crossing countless times, but never attempted to shoot a train here, so I never noticed the C&NW sign before. I love the interesting and unique ampersand the C&NW occasionally used. I must attempt to catch a train here again when the sign is not backlit. The former C&NW freight house is partially visible in the background (to the left of the newer WC 'No Trespassing' sign).

CN 4721, et al.
Title:  CN 4721, et al.
Description:  A CN local parallels W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. as it heads northeast with about 23 cars via former C&NW rails at Stroebe, WI on 10 Dec. '17. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI until 14 Apr. '16 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on this site)). Train was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna and had two locomotives, CN 4721 and CN 9473. The ongoing reconstruction of the Hwy. 41/ Hwy. 10/Hwy. 441 (a.k.a. the Tri-County Expressway) interchange (a.k.a. the Polish Connection) is visible in the background. The interchange opened to traffic on 30 Nov. '75. When Hwy. 10 was reconstructed and relocated ca. '97, this interchange was not simultaneously reconstructed to form a full interchange, but the ongoing, extensive expansion and reconstruction will make it a full interchange as well as increase traffic capacity.

GTW 5857
Title:  GTW 5857
Description:  CN local passes Intertape Polymer Group, IPG, 741 4th St., Menasha, WI, and crosses the former Manitowoc St. grade crossing via the former joint MILW/SOO rails at Menasha, WI on 10 Dec. '17. Founded in Menasha in Dec. 1917 as George Banta Paper Co., an affiliate of the George Banta Publishing Co. They merged with Menasha’s Gebrick Paper Co. in ’19 and continued under the Banta name. The name was changed to Central Paper Products Co. (later shortened to Central Paper Co.) ca. Sep. ’20, about the same time they moved to their new location at 422 Manitowoc St. on the north side of the joint MILW/SOO tracks. It’s the same facility, but the address changed when a portion of Manitowoc St. was vacated to allow westward expansion ca. ’76-’80. The facility was acquired by Alco Standard Corp., based in Valley Forge, PA, ca. 29 Sep. ’69 but continued to operate as Central Paper. The name changed to Central Products Co. at some point after ’74. Spinnaker Industries, Inc. purchased Central Products Co. from Alco ca. 1 Jul. ‘95. Intertape Polymer Group, Inc., from Canada, purchased Central Products from Spinnaker ca. 12 Apr. ’99. Train was returning from the Hilbert-area and will complete some work in Menasha before heading back to the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI.

Description:  CN through freight approaches the Main St. over pass as it traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI 13 Dec. '17. Train had three locomotives, IC 2725, CN 5691, CN 2298. The rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties, visible to the left of the locomotives, rest atop the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. The silo in the background belongs to Eggers Industries (originally Hardwood Products Corp.), 164 N. Lake St., a periodic rail customer. The woodpile background left contains remnants of old telephone poles which were removed from somewhere along the line earlier this year. The east leg of the wye is in the foreground.

The Neenah Stove Works, currently occupied by Hafemeister Machine Corp., 635 Main St. and International Children's Fund, 619 Main St., is partially visible background left. [The facility has undergone numerous name changes in its long history, but if one were to pick a generic and historic name for it, it would need to be Neenah Stove Works because that is what it was referred to for so many years, through several changes in ownership. The second most common generic reference would be the Neenah foundry, because for many years it was the only foundry in Neenah, but obviously that could cause confusion today.] Clearwater Paper Corp., formerly Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI until 14 Apr. '16)), stands background right. The east leg of the wye is in the foreground.

Description:  CN local emerges from behind All About Packaging, Inc., Warehouse #2, 1325 S. Perkins St., and approaches S. Perkins St. as it heads northeast through the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 14 Dec. '17. Train was preparing to drop off a cut of cars before continuing on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. There is a spur along the south side of the building, the wheel stops are partially hidden in the snow, but the turnout for the spur was removed years ago. The oldest part of the building was completed in Mar. '60, the new facility for the Fox Valley Sheltered Workshop. Inc. (started in '55 to created employment opportunities for the disabled). It became Valley Packaging Industries Inc. ca. mid- or late-'80s. After they moved to a new facility, this one has been home to Valley Planing Mill, Inc., followed by Perfect Patterns, Inc. It is currently a warehouse for All About Packaging, Inc., whose main facility is a couple of blocks away at 2200 W. Everett St. Founded at Appleton, WI in '96, they specialize in thermoformed packaging.

MDW 4071
Title:  MDW 4071
Description:  MDW 4071 was part of the consist of a CN local momentarily fouling N. Lake St. via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 17 Dec. '17. I thought there was an archaic regulation from the '30s that prohibits such advertising on railroad rolling stock. A cursory internet search produced no authoritative information on the subject, just a whole lot of unsubstantiated opinion. Go figure. Clearwater Paper Corp., formerly Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI until 14 Apr. '16)), looms in the background.
