Volkmer. Here is an image of a photo by William D. Volkmer that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 19 July 1958. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8607, #8610, and an A-A set of GM-EMD EP-22's whose road numbers are not recorded. #8607 and #8610 are APS-24MS's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 2,400 horsepower each. #8607 was constructed in December of 1956, while #8610 was built in January of 1957. In this context, they're pulling a passenger train that's just leaving the Altoona Station and heading up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where the ALCo's will uncouple and return to this location and await another helper run up "The Mountain." Description:
17th Street. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train in Altoona, Pennsylvania, during the Spring of 1960. Shown here are PRR engines #8608 and #8610. Both are APS-24MS's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 2,400 horsepower each. #8608 was built in 1955, but #8610 was built in 1956. They are pushing a westbound mail/express train under the 17th Street Bridge. Also visible is N-5 Caboose #5010, for mail/express service only. The words under the number "5010" are as follows: "ASSIGNED TO PASSENGER SERVICE // RAILWAY EXPRESS AGENCY"

Uhey are uncoupling from one end of the empty 12-car "Special," will run-around to the other end, and then recouple to pull the loaded train. Visible in the red jackew is my friend Mr. Samuel Walker of Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania.

RR City. Here is an original photo that I took in connection with the Pennsylvania Railroad's "Railroad City Limited" in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 25 April 1964. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #8609, #8610, and #8606. All are APS-24MS's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 2,400 horsepower each; #8609 and #8610 were built in 1956, but #8606 was built in 1955. They are running light to the Altoona Passenger Station where they will couple onto the 18-car "Railroad City Limited" for its journey out the Hollidaysburg Branch Line, up the New Portage Branch via the Muleshoe Curve, making a loop through the tunnels at Gallitzin, and then heading down the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to the Altoona Station. This photo was taken adjacent to ALTO Tower, just short of the 17th Street Bridge.

Here is page 29 of a 43-page article by James J.D. Lynch, Jr., entitled "Overview Of The History And Development Of The Pennsylvania Railroad's Altoona Shops." It was published originally in the Autumn 1996 issue of "Keystone" magazine, page 46. Bottom Photo: Shown here are PRR engines #5898 and three other "E" units whose numbers are not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD. #5898 is an EP-22 built in 1951 and rated at 2,250 horsepower. Middle Photo: Shown here are PRR engines #8610 and another unit whose number is not recorded. Both were built by the American Locomotive Company. #8610 is an APS-24MS built in 1956 and rated at 2,400 horsepower. These units are actually the rear-end "pushers" for the mail-express train pictured in the bottom photo.
