Wood. Here is a postal card entitled "Pennsylvania 5439." No Postmark. Caption On Reverse: "In the darkness of night, Class K-4 Pacific No. 5439 stands at rest in the South Amboy, N.J., enginehouse. The time was October, 1957, three weeks before the end of all steam operations on the Pennsylvania R.R. Photo by Don Wood." #5439 is a K-4S (4-6-2) built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during March of 1927 and retired in April of 1958 after 31 years of faithful service. Mr. Woods' Caption: "K4 5439 poses in the doorway of South Amboy enginehouse. The time was late on two counts: the 1:30 AM photo time plus the curtain coming down on the career of the engine herself, as well as for all Pennsy steam. The end was less than a month away, at this was October, 1957." |
