CN autorack train passes the former SOO depot as it heads northwest through Waupaca, WI on Independence Day, 4 Jul. '15. This depot was built by WC in 1907 and opened in 1908; it is the 3rd WC depot at Waupaca. Passenger service ended in Jan. ‘65, but the railroad continued to use the depot until 1987. It stood vacant and decaying for many years until restoration began after it was purchased from the CN in 2004. The previous wooden depot had burned down on 5 May 1907. That 2nd depot was completed in Apr. 1881, when the original ca. 1871 depot was converted into a freight house. That original depot, then freight house, burned down in Nov. ’48. That led to the construction of the current brick freight house in early 1949, it is partially visible to the right of the lead locomotive. Train had three locomotives, CN 2880, CN 2037, and CN 207. |
