Description:
CN, former SOO, originally WC roundhouse at the yard in Rhinelander, WI on 11 Oct. '13. Built in 1899, originally four stalls, a six-stall addition was built in 1903. It was reduced to 5 stalls at some point and the turntable was removed. The brick wall on the left side used to be a firewall separating the two halves of the roundhouse.

Description:
West and south walls of restored SOO Collins, WI depot on display at Pinecrest Historical Village, in Town of Manitowoc Rapids, Manitowoc Co., WI on 7 Oct. '14. It was built in 1896 and was probably located between the railroad tracks and Main St., just east of Milwaukee St., in Collins. If that was the correct location, then this photograph depicts the northeast and northwest walls. Depot was moved to Pinecrest in 1972.

SOO Waupaca, WI Freight House
Description:
CN local passes behind the former SOO freight house as it approaches Oak St./Hwy. E while servicing Waupaca Foundry, Plant 1, out of frame to left, at Waupaca, WI on 4 Apr. '15. This is the 2nd WC/SOO freight house at Waupaca. It was built in early 1949 after the original freight house burned down in Nov. '48. The bowling alley next door to the south caught fire and the flames spread to the freight house. The original 1871 WC passenger depot was converted into a freight house after the 2nd depot was completed in Apr. ‘81. The 1st freight house had been moved from its original location to the current freight house location ca. 1901, when the 2nd depot was moved to the west side of Guard St., now Oak St.

SOO North Fond du Lac, WI Depot
Description:
The southwest wall of the SOO, originally WC, North Fond du Lac, WI depot, now located at the Historic Galloway House & Village at Fond du Lac, WI, as seen on 31 May '15. I believe this would have been the north wall when it was at its original site. The depot was built ca. 1906, after the Wis. Railroad Commission ordered the WC to do so. After about 7-9 years of appeals by the new village to the WC went unanswered, a group of about 30 business owners filed a petition with the Commission in 1905. I haven’t been able to pinpoint the original site of the depot, but the Commission ordered it erected “immediately south of the point where the south line of Clinton street would intersect said line of railway if the same were extended in an easterly direction to such line of road, and that a right of way be furnished over and across the yard of the respondent Railway Company from the east line of Marcou street to said depot, sufficient for the purpose of enabling teams and foot passengers to pass over the same.” The depot was acquired from the railroad and moved to its current location ca. 1974, thanks to the efforts of Fred A. Weller.

The northwest and northeast walls of the SOO, originally WC, North Fond du Lac, WI depot, now located at the Historic Galloway House & Village at Fond du Lac, WI, as seen on 31 May '15. I believe these would have been the east and south walls when it was at its original site. The depot was built ca. 1906, after the Wisconsin Railroad Commission ordered the WC to do so. Interior of a crossing shanty preserved at the Historic Galloway House & Village at Fond du Lac, WI, as seen on 31 May '15. The stove is a ‘Smoke Consumer’ No. 140, made by the Estate Stove Co., Hamilton, OH. I did not notice a plaque or documentation identifying which railroad the shanty belonged to or which crossing it used to protect. The exterior paint scheme is identical to that of the former SOO depot out of frame to the left. If one presumes the exterior colors of both structures are historically accurate, one can presume the previous owner.

Description:
CN autorack train passes the former SOO depot as it heads northwest through Waupaca, WI on Independence Day, 4 Jul. '15. This depot was built by WC in 1907 and opened in 1908; it is the 3rd WC depot at Waupaca. Passenger service ended in Jan. ‘65, but the railroad continued to use the depot until 1987. It stood vacant and decaying for many years until restoration began after it was purchased from the CN in 2004. The previous wooden depot had burned down on 5 May 1907. That 2nd depot was completed in Apr. 1881, when the original ca. 1871 depot was converted into a freight house. That original depot, then freight house, burned down in Nov. ’48. That led to the construction of the current brick freight house in early 1949, it is partially visible to the right of the lead locomotive. Train had three locomotives, CN 2880, CN 2037, and CN 207.

SOO Loyfl, WI Depot (replica)
Description:
A replica of the second SOO depot at Loyal, WI on 21 Aug. '15. The original depot was built by WC ca. 1891 when the line was laid. It stood at intersection of E. Depot St. and E. Mill St., it burned down ca. May '17. The second depot was completed in Nov. '17, at 24' x 90' it was the largest depot on that branch. It was dismantled in '68. The Irban and Leona Aumann family constructed a replica of the second depot in '00. They donated it to the Loyal Area Historical Society for a museum in '05 and moved to its present location at 501 E. Elm Dr./Hwy. 98, about 1,500 ft. NE of the original site. A reduced scale replica of the water tower that stood next to the depot has also been built. A collection of SOO station signs, most from northern WI, adorns the water tower.

Southeast and northeast walls of the former SOO depot at 112 E. Veterans Parkway, Marshfield, WI on 22 Aug. '15. This is the 3rd WC/SOO depot at Marshfield. The original wooden depot was built ca. 1872 on S. Chestnut Ave. at S. Depot St., it burned down 27 Jun. '87. The 2nd wooden depot was built on S. Depot St. between Central Ave. and Maple St. and was completed ca. Aug. '87. It measured 20' x 125' with 16' walls, 20' x '36 freight room on east end, 12' x '12 baggage room, 18' x '20 ladies waiting room, '20 x '20 men’s waiting room, and 12' x '20 office. It burned down almost exactly 20 years after the 1st one on 16 Jun. '07. Construction of the 3rd and current stone depot commenced soon after at the site of the 2nd depot. Passenger service ended in '65 but the railroad continued to use the depot for many years. The depot was moved ca. '02 in preparation of the Hwy. 13/Veterans Parkway construction project, which opened to traffic 9 Oct. '03. The new road encompassed S. Depot St., so the depot had to be moved about 125' south of its original location. Some references claim the depot was rotated 180 degrees from its original orientation when it was moved. In comparing old photographs, it doesn't look like it was rotated to me. The depot is now home to Royal Tokyo restaurant.

This CN container train snuck up on me while I was photographing the southwest and southeast walls of the former SOO depot at 112 E. Veterans Parkway, Marshfield, WI on 22 Aug. '15. Darn quiet zones! Unfortunately I did not catch the road number. This is the 3rd!WC/SOO depot at Marshfield. The original wooden depot was built ca. 1872 on S. Chestnut Ave. at S. Depot St., it burned down 27 Jun. '87. The 2nd wooden depot was built on S. Depot St. `etween Central Ave. and Maple St. and was completed ca. Aug. '87. Title:
SOO Spencer, UI Crossing Shanty
Description:
Former SOO crossing shanty preserved on S. Park St. next to the CN, former SOO, rails at Spencer, WI on 22 Aug. '15. It was constructed in 1910 on the west side of the tracks at Clark St./Hwy. 98/Hwy. C, about 300 ft. out of frame to left. Henry Fenhouse was the flagman who worked out of it, almost exclusively, 12 hours a"day, 7 days a week, until he was replaced by automated signals in Jun. 1949. The shanty was moved to his house north of town and used as a playhouse. Later it was sold to a friend named Weis and moved to his farm 5 miles east of town on Hwy. C where it was used as a smokehouse. It was probably Vernal or Ray Weis, who jointly operated the farm on Hwy. C startyd by their grandfather. A subsequent owner of the farm donated it to the Village of Spencer so it could be preserved, it was moved back to town on 28 Jul. 1986.

Title:
SOO Milladore, WI Depot
Description:
The former SOO depot sits near the CN tracks at Milladore, WI, on 22 Aug. '15. Milladore was originally known as Mill Creek, the name was changed when the post office was established because a post office with that name already existed in Richland Co. The depot closed in '61. It was moved elsewhere in town in '63 and used as an appliance shop, R. Ulman Electric, owned by Rudy Ulman. At some point it was moved again to its current location where it is used for a shed on a farm. I believe the depot stood between the tracks and Main St./Hwy. P (formerly Hwy. 10), between Haynes St. and Wheeler St. If I hadn’t been on a time schedule, I would have been tempted to seek permission from the property owner to get better photographs.

Description:
The east and north walls of the SOO depot at Gresham, WI, on 13 Jun. '20. The depot was built by the W&N in 1906. The first scheduled train arrived in Gresham from Shawano at 1155 hours on 11 Feb. 1907. The W&N was purchased by the SOO in 1921. The depot was closed in 1963. The depot was moved in 1974, through the efforts of the Gresham Women’s Club, a former depot agent and his wife, and numerous other village members. Now the Gresham Depot Museum, 1311 N. Main St., it currently stands about 200 ft. north of its original location and has been turned about 45 degrees from its original orientation.
