CB&Q VO-1000 9376 |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad VO-1000 9376 at Clyde, Illinois on June 6, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This was one of 30 Baldwin VO-1000's allotted to the CB&Q during World War II, when restrictions were placed on the locomotive builders by the War Production Board. The Q would have preferred EMD switchers, but EMD was restricted to building FT road diesels, and the switcher production was split between Alco and Baldwin. As it turned out, the Burlington was the third largest owner of VO-1000's, behind the Santa Fe (59) and the Frisco (38). This one was built during November 1944 (c/n 70318) and retired and traded to GE for new power during March 1966. However, in 1967 GE sold this and ten other CB&Q VO-1000's to the Atlantic Coast Line, and it continued working on the ACL (after July 1, 1967, the Seaboard Coast Line) in CB&Q paint and number until retired by the SCL sometime during 1977-78. |

CB&Q VO-1000 9377 |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad VO-1000 9377 at North Kansas City, Missouri on June 21, 1964, Kodachrome by Lou Schmitz, Chuck Zeiler collection. This locomotive was built during November 1944 (c/n 70319) and traded in for new power during April 1965. It was delivered with a single exhaust stack, and at some point received a four stack modification to fix an overheating problem. The construction (serial) numbers for the CB&Q VO-1000's are not always sequential because Baldwin was restricted to building locomotives of 1000 horsepower or less by the War Production Board (WPB) during World War II, and the WPB would dole out the finished locomotives on an as-needed basis. |

CB&Q VO-1000 9378 detail |
Description: |
CB&Q VO-1000 9378 at North Kansas City at Missouri on June 21, 1964, Kodachrome by Lou Schmitz, Chuck Zeiler collection. This is a closeup of a photo posted earlier. As I was cleaning the scan, I noticed that the right half of the letter W in West was cleanly displayed over the louvers. It would appear the the CB&Q welded a piece of sheet metal over the louvers and painted it to match the otherwise stenciled slogan on the side of the locomotive. This is, of course, only of interest to CB&Q fans. Also note that these particular louvers appear to be cut inward to the carbody, whereas all the other louvers are punched outward. This may explain the need for a piece of sheet metal to continue the letter W over the louvers, which on all the other CB&Q locomotives, was simply painted over the louvers. |

Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad NW2 9207 and VO-1000 9379 at Clyde, Illinois on November 15, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This NW2 was built in March 1941 (c/n 1288) on EMD Order E376 for 15 NW2's (#'s 9205-9219), among the last switchers built by EMD for the duration of World War II, when on April 4, 1942 the War Production Board (WPB) restricted EMD to building road diesels (the model FT) and model 567 diesel engine blocks for ships and submarines. As a result, when the CB&Q went shopping for more diesel switchers, the WPB assigned Alco S2's (9 - #'s 9300-9308) and Baldwin VO-1000's (30 - #'s 9350-9379). The last CB&Q VO-1000, #9379, built in December 1944 (c/n 71978) is seen here, and was retired in March 1967. |
