Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad NW2 9207 and VO-1000 9379 at Clyde, Illinois on November 15, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This NW2 was built in March 1941 (c/n 1288) on EMD Order E376 for 15 NW2's (#'s 9205-9219), among the last switchers built by EMD for the duration of World War II, when on April 4, 1942 the War Production Board (WPB) restricted EMD to building road diesels (the model FT) and model 567 diesel engine blocks for ships and submarines. As a result, when the CB&Q went shopping for more diesel switchers, the WPB assigned Alco S2's (9 - #'s 9300-9308) and Baldwin VO-1000's (30 - #'s 9350-9379). The last CB&Q VO-1000, #9379, built in December 1944 (c/n 71978) is seen here, and was retired in March 1967. |
