Description: |
New Orleans Public Service ST. CHARLES line streetcars 806 and 965, and TULANE line trolley buses 1171, 1202 and 1189 were parked at Carrollton Station in May 1954. Car 806 had been built by Brill in 1922 and was scrapped in February 1955, less than a year after this photo was taken; while car 965 was built by Perley Thomas in 1924 and has never been retired. The buses had been built by the St. Louis Car Co. in early 1952 for the new TULANE line and was among the last NOPSI trolley buses in service. The 1171 was retired in December 1964, when diesel buses took over the last two trolley bus lines (TULANE and CITY PARK); but the other two were not retired until March 1967 and were among 33 SLC trolley buses sold for operation in Mexico City. Description: |
New Orleans Public Service car 812 was inbound on the ST. CHARLES BELT. The car had just turned left from Tulane Avenue onto South Liberty Street, and in two blocks it would turn right onto Canal Street. The bunting with the trophy on the corner building showed that it might have been SUGAR BOWL season! Much of the area in this photo is unrecognizable today; but the tall building in the background – the JUNG HOTEL at 1500 Canal Street – is still there. Car 812 had been built by the J.G. Brill Co. in 1922 and was scrapped in April 1953. (date of photo is unknown) |

Description: |
New Orleans Public Service Inc. cars were gathered at the foot of Canal Street, near the Mississippi River, awaiting their turn to depart. TULANE line car 410 was one of 50 cars built by the Southern Car Co. in 1915 for a predecessor of NOPSI. It had a CAR HOUSE sign up, and would be retired the next year; while CEMETERIES car 873 was built by Brill in 1922. Notice the clever "194-7UP" ad on the 410, while car 873 was promoting rival Royal Crown Cola. |
