Built in December 1946 (c/n 3601) on EMD Order E695, it was retired in October 1978, the prime mover was removed, and it was put on display in a park in Farber, Missouri. However, the city felt it was a liability and safety hazard, and it was scrapped sometime around 1990. It is seen here heading a train known as "The Plug", a GM&O commuter train between Chicago and Joliet (anyone know the origin on the train name?). Also seen is BN E9Am 9910 which fared a bit better in the survival game, for a while, working for the Nashville and Eastern after retiring from the BN in 1992. It is seen here about to divert to the southwestern suburbs of Chicago. |

Gulf Mobile & Ohio Railroad F3 880B departing Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in July 1978, photo by Chuck Zeiler. The sanders appear to be on as "The Plug", GM&O's commuter train between Chicago and Joliet accelerates out of Fort Wayne Junction and heads southwesterly toward Joliet. Fort Wayne Junction was the name of the location just south of the South Branch of the Chicago River, where both the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Gulf Mobile and Ohio Railroad shared a bridge. Once over the bridge, the railroads parted ways. It was so named because the PRR's Fort Wayne sub was the route into Chicago. This same junction was known as the Alton Junction to the PRR and Milwaukee Road people, named for GM&O's predecessor into Chicago, the Alton Railroad. Alton Junction also marked the southern end of CUS Company (Chicago Union Station) rails. |

At the time I took this shot, there were a group of F 3s that rotated on and off the "Plug" as the ex GM&O train to Joliet was known. At the time, it was the only train on this line, a poor stepchild to ICGs electrified service to Matteson. The F 3s had the distinction of being the oldest road power then in use on a Class 1 road, having been built in 1946. There are now several trains on this route, but they dont have any of the charm of an F 3 and ex GM&O coaches. |
