Description:  The LOF41-28 switches GEMCO yard while an unknown railfan watches from a plastic chair he brought to the platform. This job goes to work every morning at GEMCO, and can run a few miles north up the line. Much of its time will be spent arranging trains in the yard itself.

Cotton Belt GP40M-2
Title:  Cotton Belt GP40M-2
Description:  After 14 years of UP control, this is one of the very few remaining Cotton Belt engines with its original number and no patch. It is seen here switching GEMCO yard in Van Nuys. It was built a GP40 in August of 1971 as Western Pacific #3533. After the UP merger, it became UP #681, before being sold to the Chicago Missouri & Western Railway as their #3016. Upon retirement, it was rebuilt by Morrison-Knudson in November 1990 into a GP40M-2. It is slotted to become UP #1496.

Los Angeles Railway trolley being restored
Title:  Los Angeles Railway trolley being restored
Description:  This is a St. Louis Car (California Car Class H-3 or Type H) narrow gauge streetcar built in 1924. It was originally delivered to the Los Angeles Railway (42" gauge, LARy). After that, it served for Tahoe Valley Lines before going to Orange Empire. Today it sits in the Pacific Electric Subway Terminal, undergoing restoration to become a static display.

Amtrak SLO to LA Surfliner
Title:  Amtrak SLO to LA Surfliner
Description:  Cabbage car #90208 comes out of the setting sun and is about to cross over Woodley with the last regular Amtrak train in California that still uses Horizon Fleet and Amfleet cars. The no trespassing gates and signs have cropped up at many (if not all) of the grade crossings through the San Fernando Valley, in reaction to the deadly Glendale accident of some years back. As an aside, the first image I ever took on this line, back in 1985, was of an Amtrak train behind an F40PH... pretty cool that it's still possible 25 years later.

Title:  Amtrak's 792 under the Busch Gardens Monorail Bridge
Description:  This bridge over the former Southern Pacific Coast Line in Van Nuys is the last vestige of the once thriving and popular Bush Gardens Amusement park. The bridge was both a walkway and a monorail span, and is just west of CP Raymer. From studying old images, it appears that the monorail hung off the outside of the bridge (on either side). The theme park itself was about cut in half by the tracks, with lakes and islands and rides where today there are parking lots for semis.

Title:  Pacific Electric Grand Canal Bridge
Description:  Each year there seems to be a few less reminders of the Los Angeles Pacific Venice Short Line's once mighty main line from Los Angeles to Santa Monica. In fact, the ROW of the cutoff to Santa Monica, just a block or so north of this shot, is completely built over. But the Grand Canal Bridge survives here in Venice, and is used now as part of a beach parking lot.

Description:  There are thirty locomotives in this image... two GEVOs on the front and two GEVOs on the back sandwich 26 DIT and I believe LUGO Dash 8s, which are being moved from the soon to be reactivated Citcom Yard in Commerce CA to Barstow, where they can be kept safe in the desert. I'm pretty confident that this is the last I will ever see of them.

Title:  D-LACBAR3-06M
Description:  The D-LACBAR3-06M creeps along at about 5 or 10 MPH on the North Vail Lead. The train is made up of four ES44DCs (two on the front and two on the back) and 26 DIT (dead in transit) Dash 8-40CWs. Having already come to the realization that I am aging with the retirment of Class One Dash 7s, now seeing a railroad completely rid itself of Dash 8s is all the worse. The units are going to be stored in Barstow for now, but are unlikely to ever turn another wheel for the BNSF.

Title:  Union Pacific SYULV-11
Description:  Union Pacific officer's special behind BSA Commemorative unit 2010 passes through the Alhambra trench. This train began the day at Yuma, heading west on the old SP Sunset Route (Yuma Sub and Alhambra Sub) in the morning, and then passing "around the horn" moving from LATC (Shops) to East Yard on the River Sub. I managed to catch it again after this shot in Montebello, when it took to the Los Angeles & Salt Lake to Las Vegas (Los Angeles Sub, BNSF Cajon Sub, Cima Sub).

Title:  Train #24 heads back to Shops
Description:  The Frasier Service train has finished its day, unloading passengers at Skagway, running around the train, and now pulilng the deadheading equipment back up to Shops. Power is a set of three unique GE 90 Class Shovel Nose diesels. Powered by ALCO 251s, these engines sound like ALCOs, but have a very unusual look. Only thing immediately GE about them is the headlight casing (classic 1950s GE). The water to the right is Pullen Creek.

Nine hour late Southwest Chief
Title:  Nine hour late Southwest Chief
Description:  I actually had no idea that #3, the Southwest Chief, was running nine hours late and was completely surprised when it came by at track speed. Prior to reaching Trinadad, both P42s had lost their air compressors. A freight unit came in to rescue and took the train as far as Albuquerque, where the lead P42 (the rescue engine) was added.

Description:  While the 1st Trick Local's crew has gone to beans, their trains waits in the moribund, if not totally abaondened, Lawndale Yard. Interestingly, while in Redondo Beach here, the train will pass into Lawndale shortly after it leaves Lawndale Yard. It will then proceed back into Redondo Beach before hitting Alcoa Yard in Torrance.

Title:  Travel Town's Baldwin
Description:  Not only is this the last remaining operable Baldwin RS12 in the world, it is the last remaining one period. Of course, it cannot go very far now that it is in landlocked Travel Town, but as one of two operable engines on the property, it is often used to move the other displays around.

Title:  PHL 33
Description:  The 7AM Yard Switcher shoves a cut of propane tansk north along the Gaffey Street Sub to Amerigas. Ths Gaffey Street Sub is but a small stub of the one time through line up to Los Angeles (Pacific Electric's San Pedro Via Torrance Line). This line had actually been abandoned through here (ending at a bakery near where the Target store is now), but was re-laid about 25 years back when Amerigas set up shop.

Description:  The Ventura County Railroad returns from working the South Oxnard Branch. The crew had worked the area near International Paper Hueneme Mill for quite a long time before heading back with these auto racks off the Diamond Branch. The location is about where I believe Round Mountain Junction once was. The stream on the right is the pretty "Oxnard Industrial Drain."

Description:  The westbound return leg of OSBDSDB2 18 is seen with the rear locomotive being pulled past the historic San Dimas train station. There was a slight break in the rain hear, on what could potentially turn out to be the last ever City of Hope Christmas Train heading west through here. I sure hope the rumors turn out to be false.

Description:  After dropping its passengers at City of Hope in Duarte, the OSBDSBD2 18 braves a deluge on its way east back to San Bernardino. It is seen her passing the historic Azusa train station, which is likely to be restored soon as a part of the Metro Rail Gold Line extension (the first phase of which will include a stop right here.

Title:  The Saugus Local high balls CP Saugus
Description:  A very brief (and filtered) sucker hole opened up just seconds before the soutbound LOF42 22 came around the curve and pounded the rail here, creating some nice light. The lead unit is a Helm leaser, a GP40 body with an MPI rebuild into a GP38-2. The second unit is a UP GP40 that has been rebuilt to GP40-2 standards.

Title:  Oil Cans at Broadway
Description:  The Oil Cans - OWPDO 23, pull through the signals at CP Main as they are about to pass under Broadway before making their stop at Main Street to change crews. The lashup consists of the three engines the Oil Cans brought north, two SLO helpers and two engines from work trains. From here, the SLO crew caught a ride home and the LA crew took the train down to Dolores.
