Title:  GTW 4914
Description:  A CN train passes the FV&LS (or FOXY), former CN, originally C&NW, depot after setting out cars at the yard at Appleton Junction, WI, on 29 Dec. '24. Train was headed for Kaukauna. There used to be a diamond right about where the locomotive is, from ca. 1874 until at least 1968, where the MLS&W crossed the C&NW. When the MLS&W was absorbed by the C&NW on 1 Sep. 1893, their line became the Ashland Div. of the C&NW. The white building partially visible in the background is the former home of the Harry H. Long Moving and Storage Co., 1001 S. Douglas St. This building dates to at least 1953, when it was listed in the local directory (it was not listed in ’51). The building has a spur, but it hasn’t been used for quite a while (except for occasional MoW equipment). They moved to a larger facility in Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI in 2001.

MMM, formerly Hwy. 29, as it heads southeast with 2 cars via a remnant of the former C&NW main line at the Town of Richmond, Shawano Co., WI, on 31 Jan. '25. This is a rare, approximately 2-mile scrap of the former C&NW mainline which once ran 83 miles from Green Bay to Wausau (this is the only active remnant outside of those two cities). The rest of that former main line is now the Mountain-Bay State Trail. It is an awesome bicycle ride, but I (obviously) would prefer to see trains running on it.

Description:  A FV&LS (or FOXY) train crosses Hwy. MM as it prepares to switch Shawano Specialty Papers (div. of Little Rapids Corp.) via former CN, historically C&NW, rails at West Shawano, WI, on 31 Jan. '25. Founded as the Wolf River Paper & Fiber Co. on 7 Feb. 1894, the name was changed to Shawano Paper Mills ca. Nov. ‘49. The facility was leased to Little Rapids Pulp Co. (later Little Rapids Corp.) in Feb. ’50, they purchased the facility on 25 Jun. ’55. The name changed to Little Rapids Corp.-Shawano Mill in ‘93, but it was still commonly referred to as Shawano Paper Mill. The area around the mill, which includes some former company houses, used to be referred to as West Shawano. It was labelled as such in the '11 county atlas (Upham & Russell Cos. Plat and Riverview Addition), the '20 township map, and the name still appears on some official property records. The paper mill stands along an approximately 2-mile scrap of the former C&NW mainline which once ran 83 miles from Green Bay to Wausau (this is the only active remnant outside of those two cities). That former main line is now the Mountain-Bay State Trail. It is an awesome bicycle ride, but I (obviously) would prefer to see trains running on it.

I thought the tower stood by the clump of trees to the left, but a review of others' photographs on rrpicturearchives.net as well as some old maps has proven that my recollection of the tower's location was erroneous.

Description:  A FV&LS (or FOXY) train crosses W. Spencer St. as it pulls 8 cars south at Appleton Junction, WI, on 31 Jan. '25. I'm not sure who laid these rails, they formed an interchange between the former C&NW yard (out-of-frame to the right) and the former SOO yard (out-of-frame to the left). The FV&LS inherited both yards from the CN. The tracks form the border between Appleton (far side) and the Town of Grand Chute (near side). There is a simple memorial attached to the railing at the center of the bridge. Sadly, Betty Rolf was murdered here on 7 Nov. '88. Unsolved for nearly 36 years, on 21 May '24 Gene Meyer was convicted for murdering her.

Title:  AMTK 345, et al.
Description:  AMTK Train 8, ‘Empire Builder,’ crosses N. Spring St. as it arrives at the CP, former MILW, depot (out-of-frame to the left) at Columbus, WI, as it heads southeast on 27 Feb. '25. Train had two locomotives, AMTK 345 and AMTK 305. Consist included AMTK 61047, AMTK 39031, AMTK 32086, AMTK 32069, AMTK 38067, AMTK 34114, AMTK 38043, AMTK 34031, AMTK 31045, AMTK 32050. Designed in the Italianate style, it was constructed of lumber with brick veneer by the M&StP in 1871. When the current depot was built in 1906, this became the freight house. I don't know when the railroad stopped using it, but it obviously became part of the Caldwell Lumber Co. quite a while ago. The company, originally known as Mair and Caldwell, started when R. J. Caldwell and William Mair purchased the Brittingham and Hixon Lumber Co. The depot is currently used by Vita Plus.

GTW 4901
Title:  GTW 4901
Description:  A CN train parallels W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. and crosses an apparently unnamed stream as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Stroebe, WI, on 28 Feb. '25. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on this site)). The approaches of the Roland Kampo Bridge (a.k.a. the Polish Connection) at the Hwy. 41/Hwy. 10/Hwy. 441 (a.k.a. Tri-County Expressway) interchange loom in the background. Modern maps tend to omit the W. from W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. for some reason, it is also absent on the current street sign. Some old maps include the W., some old maps omit the W.
