CRI&P's #1 in LaSalle Street Station |
Description: |
Day approximate, month and year correct. The tall building is the Board of Trade and the darker closer building is the long-gone headhouse replaced by the new Board of Trade Buildng. J. C. Smith, Jr. sent th follhwing comment: "The locomotive is the same design created for General Motor's Aerotrain, but this particular trainset is an ACF-built Talgo, originally called the Jet Rocket. This particular model LWT-1 differs from the two sister locomotives, Rock Island numbers 2 and 3, acquired with the two actual Aerotrains, in that it had a Blomberg front truck, whereas the other two featured a four-wheel Flexi-Coil, similar to those used under some EMD switchers intended for some road service use." |

CRI&P Golden State |
Description: |
This is the CRI&P's Golden State trying to out run the building thunder storm in New Mexico on July 28, 1962. Southern Pacific handled the train from Los Angeles to Tucumcari, NM where the Rock Island took over and will bring it to Chicago. In this light, Kodachrome 10 had trouble stopping the action. |

CRI&P 427 Shot From the 12th St. Bridge |
Description: |
Notice the NYC container operation to the right. They are not containers in today's sense. As you can see they are semi-trailers and can't be stacked. I'm sure the wheels had to be removed to fit under bridges and through tunnels. Note each has a NYC logo which probably means they are captive. They seem to be being unloaded/loaded at the fright house in the background. Anyhow, I bet any railroad would love today to have a contained facility this closes to the Loop and North Michigan Ave. Unfortunately I can't improve the picture quality anymore (cheap film and processing on a teenager's budget) and that the cat tails hang across the RI locos. |

CRI&P 111 on West Leads to St. Paul Union Station |
Description: |
The head house is still standing in very good shape with restaurants in it. The waiting room over the tracks was closed off a few years ago when I visited the station. The Mississippi River is just to the right of the photo and the two right tracks are all that remain. Amtrak's Empire Builder uses them but does not stop. Most of the land here, under the station, and the yards beyond is now used for parking. Pulling Quite a Train, Diamonds are with the PRR, at Englewood Union Station |
Description: |
This is Rock Island's version of EMD's BL2. BL stood for "branch line" because the unit was lighter than an F-unit and much easier to work with (i.e., steps on all corners). In a sense they were a transition to Geeps. Here 17 year old number 425 is filling out its life in commuter service with a northbound morning rush hour train at Englewood Union Station on the south side of Chicago. Those are PRR tracks it is about to cross. |

Arguably the most beautiful diesel locomotives ever made were the EMD shovel nosed E5As and E6As. Here April 21, 1965's morning sun makes the 24 year old Rock Island E6A 630 looks almost new. She is crossing the PRR diamonds at Englewood Union Station on Chicago's south side with a SB commuter train. Pigs are on another RI track. |

CRI&P 1271 in 1969 |
Description: |
On Sept. 1, 1969 Rock Island GP7 #1271 lead a westbound freight past the Joliet (Illinois) Tower and over the diamonds crossing ATSF and GM&O tracks. The Joliet Union Station was and still is about 40 feet to the left and slightly behind the photographer. RI and GM&O Chicago commuter trains terminated here and still do as METRA. Interestingly, each railroad stopped six intercity trains here in 1969: three to Chicago and three to the south and west, for a total of 18 trains. Today six Amtrak trains stop here, three to Chicago and one each to St. Louis, Kansas City, and Texas. |

Ex-DRG&W, Big Ben Spread Across the GM&O and Santa Fe Tracks and Serving as a Parlor Car on Chicago-bound CRI&P Tr #6 |
Description: |
Note, she is unfortunately behind the head-end cars. Scott Schiechl provided the following information on her. Big Ben was originally ordered by the C&O as their #1875 but was actually delivered to the Rio Grande. The D&RGW butchered the observation end to install a diaphram so that it could be used mid-train. Configured as a coach it often ran on the Yampa Valley until that train was discontinued. It was purchased by Butterworth Tours and operated as a private parlor car on the Rock Island's trains between Chicago and the Quad Cities after the RI opted not to join Amtrak. Following the RI's bankruptcy Butterworth traied to operate some kind of dinner train on the Iowa Interstate but gave up after a single season. The Butterworth's still own Big Ben and it is in good condition under roof in Iowa. For pictures of the whole trains see http://railfan44.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=663561 and http://railfan44.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=662262 |
