KCS Red River Bridge |
Description: |
This is the Kansas City Southern bridge across the Red River at Latanier, Louisiana, as seen from the west side of the river. The bridge was built as a part of the Federal project to create a navigation channel 9 feet deep and 200 feet wide between the Mississippi River and Shreveport. The government was going to replace the railroad’s existing swing span between Alexandria and Pineville – which had been built in 1901 – with a vertical lift span; but the railroad wanted a high-level fixed bridge, so this structure was built four miles south of Alexandria. Trains began using this bridge in January 1996 and the old bridge was removed in April-May 1996. |

MPEX MP2000C 6201 |
Description: |
Motive Power Industries MPEX MP2000C demonstrator 6201 was on the BNSF at Lafayette, Louisiana. The locomotive had arrived on New Orleans Public Belt from Houston on 25 August 2003 on a 30-day lease to see if the NOPB was interested in buying it; but they weren’t. It left for Houston on the BNSF on 22 October 2003 and was set out at Lafayette because of an air brake problem. The 6201 was built on the frame of an SD35 which had been built in January 1965 as Southern Pacific 4828. The unit was quickly renumbered 6912, rebuilt into SD35R 6951 in 1974, renumbered 3102 in 1980 and then 2958 in 1993. It was retired 1995, sold to Progress Rail in 1996 and ended up at Boise Locomotive in1998 where it was rebuilt into the 6201. When Wabtec closed the Boise plant in 2020, the 6201 was being used as an Emissions Test Bed, and it was scrapped there during January 2022. (approximate date of image) |

SP (T&NO) Mk-5 745 |
Description: |
Former Southern Pacific (Texas & New Orleans) Mikado 745 and its 4-car exhibit train were heading west on the BNSF (former SP) at Baldwin, Louisiana. The train had just crossed the Charenton Drainage and Navigation Canal (M.P. 104.1) on the first day of its tour around Louisiana and part of Mississippi. When this drawbridge was built in 1941 the main line of the Southern Pacific was double-tracked between Bayou Sale (milepost 95.6) and Cade, Louisiana (M.P. 132.1). The second track was removed in the early 1950's, and this bridge now provides the only evidence that there was once double track along this line. The train was owned by the Louisiana Railway Heritage Trust and had been restored by the Louisiana Steam Train Association. |

UP GP40P-2 1375 |
Description: |
Union Pacific 1375 was wearing a nasty patched paint scheme at Lake Charles, Louisiana on 21 August 2005. It had been built in November 1974 as Southern Pacific 3199, and was one of only three GP40P-2 units (SP 3197-3199) ever produced. This unit had its steam generator removed, received a larger fuel tank and was renumbered second 7602 in June 1985. (First 7602 was a Cotton Belt GP40 that had been upgraded into GP40-2 7961 in February 1982.) SP 7602 was assigned UP number 5274 in September 1997, but not but not renumbered before the railroad’s renumbering plan changed. It was assigned 1374 in December 1999, but was renumbered 1375 in August 2001 because the number 1374 was still occupied by an MP15DC which had not yet been renumbered Y1374. UP 1375 was repainted yellow on 7 October 2007 and upgraded into a GP40N in March 2019. |

BNSF SDP40 6327 |
Description: |
BNSF SDP40 6327 was at Lafayette, Louisiana on Lafayette-to-Temple, Texas train H-LALTPL. It was one of only three units of this model on BNSF. The SDP40 was a rather rare model, as only 20 examples built: six as Great Northern 320-325 in 1966 and 14 as Nacionales de Mexico 8522-8535 in 1968 and 1970. The GN units were renumbered Burlington Northern 9850-9855 and then 6394-6399; although 6397 was temporarily renumbered1976 during the nation’s bicentennial. The 6394-6396 were retired before the BNSF merger, but BN 6397-6399 became BNSF 6325-6327. This unit was retired in June 2008 and donated to the Minnesota Transportation Museum for restoration as GN 325. |

AKDN GP30 3018 |
Description: |
Acadiana Railway GP30 3018 had been built in February 1963 as Denver & Rio Grande Western 3018. It was retired on 7 May 1996 and sold by the Union Pacific to Metro East Industries at East St. Louis, Illinois, in 1997. From there, it moved on to Larry's Truck Electric Service in Ohio before February 1998 and then to the Acadiana Railway in December 1998. The Acadiana had LTE repaint it into this green and yellow paint scheme, which was inspired by a former Chicago & North Western GP7 which the railroad had previously purchased from LTE. This was the Acadiana's second GP30; their first one was former Union Pacific 701 which they acquired in 1993. |

AEX SSB1200 100015 |
Description: |
AEX 100015 was outside the S&I Locomotive shop in Opelousas, Louisiana. The loco had been built in December 1953 as Santa Fe SW9 2437 and it was upgraded by the railroad into SSB1200 1237 in March 1974. It was retired in December 1984 and sold to Railcar, Ltd., who leased it to shortline holding company RailTex. It initially operated in modified Santa Fe paint but lettered San Diego & Imperial Valley, then Texas & New Mexico and then TNER (Texas Northeastern); but on 4 October 1992 it arrived on the New Orleans Lower Coast (NOLR) in this very paint job. The paint scheme was designed by Mike Palmieri in a contest held by the railroad’s first general manager, Ted Proctor. The loco left New Orleans in April 1998 and did not return for over 16 years! RailTex’s lease with Railcar was assumed by Railamerica in February 2000 and then by Genesee & Wyoming Industries in December 2012. Meanwhile, Railcar sold the unit to The Andersons (AEX) in 2004; but it continued to move around as NOLR 1237 until its lease expired and it was relettered AEX. It returned to Louisiana in March 2015 looking like this, wearing the same paint job it had received in 1992, and went to S&I where it became SILX 12. |
