To its right are the powerhouse and the machine shop. Partially visible at the far right is the wooden coaling wharf. Photo taken from the southern side, facing "Bald Hill." Prominent here is a large number of retired steam locomotives which will soon be scrapped. Just imagine all of the long-forgotten men who designed these engines, who built them, and who fired and drove them ~ day and night ~ for years and years. William E Burket Collection.

Hollidaysburg. Here is enlarged portion of an official Pennsylvania Railroad photo that was taken from atop the wooden coaling wharf in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, c. 1915. Prominent here is a large number of retired steam locomotives which will soon be scrapped. Perhaps Isaac M. Burket ~ my maternal grandfather ~ fired and drove some of these aged locomotives. He worked for the PRR from 1900 to 1950 ~ 50 years! William E Burket Collection.

Hollidaysburg. Here is a detailed portion of an official Pennsylvania Railroad photo that was taken from atop the wooden coaling wharf in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, c. 1915. Shown here is PRR engine #1512, an H-3A (2-8-0) "Consolidated" built in Juniata during 1892 and retired in May of 1915. It will soon be scrapped. In the early 1950's, a Reclamation Plant (aka scrap dock) was built in the Frankstown section of the Hollidaysburg Yards. William E Burket Collection.

Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #473, an L-1S (2-8-2) "Mikado" built in Juniata during April of 1917 and retired in June of 1959 after 42 years of faithful service. It is shifting a string of gondolas at the Jones Street Crossing on a snowy winter's day. The western end of the PRR's newly-opened Samuel Rea Shop is visible in the distance. Lots of car storage in the Yard before the large [Samuel Rea] Car Shop was built. Petersburg Branch was in use at this time, but soon abandoned." Hollidaysburg. Here is the first of two successive duplicate 35mm color slides of photos by Herbert G. Frank, Jr., that were taken just West of Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, c. 1957. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #117, an L-1S (2-8-2) "Mikado" built in Juniata in December of 1917 and retired in October of 1959 after 42 years of faithful service. It's pulling a mixed-cargo freight train out of the Hollidaysburg Yards. It's stopped at the dwarf signal, but will shortly head toward the Wye Switches in Duncansville ~ where it will either turn right and head toward Altoona or head up the Allegheny Mountains via the Muleshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West.
