Description: |
CN local approaches N. State St. as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 25 Sep. '16. Train was pulled by a pair of GTW locomotives, GTW 4911 and GTW 5856. This was a chance encounter, otherwise I would have attempted to obtain a better vantage point to capture this pair of locomotives in their original owner's paint scheme. If you happen to be an aficionado of topnotch liquor, beer, and wine, the parking lot of the historic Flanagan's Stop and Shop is on the opposite side of the train. |

Description: |
UP 1474 parked on the former C&NW main line by the depot/yard office at the north end of South Yard at Sheboygan, WI on 3 Oct. '16. The locomotive was not parked here when we came through earlier. Seeing as iw had now been shut down, we figured that they were done for the day. We were pleasantly surprised to find it moving a short while later. This track used to be the main line, but it is now a branch that ends at Haven, WI for the UP. CN operates part of the former main line from Newton to Rockland and from Denmark to Green Bay. |

UP local activates the Wig-Wag signals and crosses Saemann Ave. as it heads north via a remnant of the former C&NW main line at Sheboygan, WI on 3 Oct. '16. The local was preparing to switch several industries at the north end of town. We were chasing the train northwdrd through heavy afternoon traffic and got far enough ahead of the train to stop here to get a shot or two. This being our first time chasing trains here, we were quite surprised to espy these classic and exceedingly rare crossing signals as we parked and started walking toward the grade crossing. |

Description: |
With the CN local power for Appleton parked in the foreground, a CN local from Neenah backs behind the depot/yard office while setting out a string of cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 9 Oct. '16. It is unusual for this local to take the track behind the depot/yard office (the branch to Kimberly and Combined Locks) when they stop in Appleton, they almost always use the main line. They will continue on to Little Chute and Kaukauna when they are done here. Appleton power is CN 9473. Neenah power is GTW 5856 and GTW 4908. |

CN local crawls through the intersection of W. College Ave./Hwy. 125 with S. Memorial Dr./N. Richmond St./Hwy. 47 (probably the busiest intersection, consequently busiest grade crossing, in Appleton) as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 9 Oct. '16. The crossing signals were malfunctioning, so a crew member had to flag the crossing (he is visible background right). The large brick building in the background is Good Company, a restaurant established in 1980. The building originally housed the Marshall Paper Co., a.k.a. Marshall Bros. Wholesale Paper, founded in 1893 by Simon and Samuel G. Marshall, father and son. Samuel's brothers Louis J. and Harry M. later joined the company, whose products included wrapping paper and printing paper. It used to receive rail service, the spur was on the north (opposite) side of the building. That spur crossed Richmond St. and serviced the Marshall & Hammel Grain Elevator & Warehouse that stood where the Walgreen's parking lot is now. Train was on its way to Little Chute and Kaukauna. |

A pair of out-of-town visitors lead a through freight past the former Sherry St. grade crossing along Union St. as they pull out of the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI on 30 Oct. '16. The building at left is what remains of the Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility at 434 Sherry St., Neenah, WI. It was built in 1902 after the original building was destroyed in a fire. The original 2-story brick building was constructed by Nicholas Simon in 1892, a 3rd story was added later. It was home to his N. Simon & Co., a cheese maker as well as wholesaler of butter, cheese and eggs, until he moved his company to Appleton, WI, ca. 1900. He was well-known both for the quality of his cheese as well as for making several gigantic cheeses. His largest weighed 12,361 lbs., was 8’ in diameter and 5’ thick, which he created on 15 Aug. ’11 at Appleton, WI, to be exhibited at the National Dairy Show held in Chicago later that year. By the 1950s this facility was home to the L. D. Schreiber & Co. refrigerated warehouse. A 2-story section at the rear of the building was demolished at some point. The parking lot at left is the site of Neenah's 2nd WC (later SOO) depot, built in 1891. This depot was torn down as soon as the third one opened, built ca. 1955 about 850 ft. to the northwest. Looking south from the Main St. overpass. |

GTW 58 |
Description: |
50CN local approaches 6th St. as it heads south via former MILW rails at Menasha, WI on 11 Dec. '16. The buildhng in the background is Dura-Fibre, LLC. Organized as the National Tractor & Mahinery Co. at Chicago in 1916 (some references state ’18). They reorganized as the Uncle Sam Tractor and Machinery Co. ca. Mar. ’18 and moved to Menasha, WI ca. Feb.%‘19. The company reorganized as Wisconsin Automotive Corp. ca. ’23 in order to add automobiles to its line of products, particularly the Harris Six. They went out of business sometime between ’24 and ’2=. The Neenah Shoe Co. occuped the plant in ’28. The Wisconsin Container Corp. was organized ca. ’31 to manufacture solid fiber and corrugated containers at this facility. The company was acquired by Menasha Corp. ca. ’69 and became their Solid Fibre Divisiol. On 8 Feb. ’73, Menasha Corp. was granted a trademark for their “Grain-tainer” fiberboard grain doors for boxcars, but I’m not positive if they were made here or at another Menasha Corp. facility. Menasha Corp. sold the facility kn ’04 and the name was changed to Dura-Fibre at some point. The facility has a spur, but does not seem to receive rail service. |

They are returning to pick up their train, which they had dropped east of De Pere St. (the current street signs have been lazily bastardized to Depere St.) while they serviced several industries. The facility in the backgrlund is currently home to Alliance Industries, 313 Appleton St., Menasha, WI,#they apply powder coatings and manufacture sand cores. Founded at Waupaca, WI in 1979, they leased the adjacent facility at 320 Appleton St. in 2005. They later purchased that facility aswell as this one/ It clearly used to receive rail service, but it does not seem to currently. The ornate spire of St. Mary's is partially visible in the background. |

Description: |
CN lncal parallels Union St. as it heads south into the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 18 Dec. '16. The guardrail at left marks the location of the former Sherqy St. grade crossing. The WC (later SOO) depot was built on the north side of Sherry!St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the wesu end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The building behind the train is what remains of the Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility at 434 Sherry St., Neenah, WI. |
