CEI 4-6-0 #158 - Chicago & Eastern Illinois |
Description: |
Here is a very early ten-wheeler built in 1902 by the Pittsburgh Locomotive Works, C&EI class T-23. It had tall 78" drivers and could develop 200 psi boiler pressure for its compound 22½ and 35X30 cylinders. The engine weight was 165,000 lbs, but after rebuilt to simple in 1904 with 20X26 cylinders, it weighed 174,800 lbs and it could produced 22,667 lb of tractive effort. It was renumbered to 616 (class G-3) in 1911 and dismantled by the C&EI in 1929. No date or location was given but it almost appears to be a builder's photo so the date and location are based on that premise. R.H Kennedy |

CEI 2-8-1 #229 - Chicago & Eastern Illinois (ex-Frisco?) |
Description: |
Thanks to several people (see comments below) who left comments when I ran into trouble researching this unusual photo of a cab marked "Frisco" but a C&EI tender. This was originally built by Alco-Schenectady in 1904 as Chicago & Indiana Coal Rwy #229 which was under C&EI control. The H-5 class was absorbed into the CEI in 1911 which was in turn under the control of the SLSF (Frisco) RR. It was renumbered 873 and reclassified as C-39. The locos were eventually scrapped in Danville, IL, in July of 1934. Original Specs - serial #29064, class H-5, 58" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 21x30" cylinders, engine weight of 182,000 lb, tractive effort of 38,778 lb. JameM Bowie was the photographer. Althouth it took me awhile to get the page updated, I want to thanks to Robert Beichler, Grayson Warbritton, and Chuck Zeiler for their assistance. |

CEI 0-6-0 #3641 - Chicago & Eastern Illinois |
Description: |
Standing outside the roundhouse at an unidentified location are two Baldwin B-4 class 0-6-0 switchers built between 1906-10. CE&I #3641 was built in June of 1906 as C&EI #19 (serial #28489, class S-38) but was renumbered in 1911 to C&EI 3641. It was leased to the KCS from 10/8/1942-6/5/1943. The loco was scrapped in November of 1947 by the C&EI. Unfortunately the number on the 2nd loco is unreadable. The entire B-4 class was retired over the period between 1934-48. The date, location and photographer were not listed on this print. |

This beautiful 4-6-2 Pacific built by Baldiwn in December of 1911 sits ready to roll in St Louis, MO. This photo is very similar to one I posted much earlier in the same location but slightly different. When the CE&I dieselized in the late 1940's and early 1950's, the entire class was scrapped. The loco was one of the early ones that was dismantled by the C&EI shops in April of 1948. Specs - K-2 class, Serial #37351, 73" drivers, 180 psi boiler pressure, 26.5x28" cylinders, engine weight of 263,000 lb, tractive effort of 41,211 lb. Although no photographer was listed, the photo is from the Dave Shaw collection. |

CEI 4-6-2 #1016 - Chicago & Eastern Illinois |
Description: |
One of only two Alco-Schenectady 4-6-2 Pacifics built for the Chicago & Eastern Illinois RR. No date, location or photographer was listed for the photo but since the tender has the loco number, it must have been taken after the 1941 tender repainting. The loco lasted until being sold for scrap to M.S. Kaplan Company in August of 1949. |

CEI 4-6-2 #1017 - Chicago & Eastern Illinois |
Description: |
One of only two Alco-Schenectady 4-6-2 Pacifics built for the Chicago & Eastern Illinois. The loco served for nearly 36 years before being sold for scrap to Erman-Howell in August of 1949. No date, location or photographer was listed for the photo but since the tender has the loco number instead of the large "C&EI" lettering, it must be after 1941 when they repainted the tenders. |

CEI 4-6-2 #1020 - Chicago & Eastern Illinois |
Description: |
Here is an action shot of the Lima K-3 class 4-6-2 Pacific built in 1923 heading up a passenger train in Chicago, IL. Note the engineer's watchful eye on the track ahead. No date was given but since the tender has the loco number on its side, it has to be after 1941 when the rr dropped the "C&EI" lettering in favor of loco numbers. No photographer was listed either. |

CEI 4-6-2 #1003 - Chicago & Eastern Illinois |
Description: |
Nice example of a 1910 Baldwin built K-1 class 4-6-2 Pacific for the Chicago & Eastern Illinois RR. Originally it was built at #334 but modified in 1930. No location, date or photographer was listed for the photo. Since the tender carries the loco number, the photo must have been taken after 1941 when the C&EI switched tender markings to numbers rather the the former "C&EI" labels. |

CEI 4-6-2 #1019 - Chicago & Eastern Illinois |
Description: |
Nice example of the Lima K-3 4-6-2 Pacific built in January of 1923 for the Chicago & Eastern Illinois. Definitely has a different look than the K-1 & K-2 built by Baldwin and the K-2as built by Alco-Schenectady. No date, location or photographer was listed for the photo. Since the tender wears the loco number, it must have been taken after 1941 when the "C&EI" was replaced with numbers. |

Description: |
Looks like this 1906 Burnham, Wms & Co Consolidation is at the iead of a passenger train or possibly just shuffling it in the yard as it is getting late in its service years to be running the rails in revenue service. Several of its sister have already met the scrap line by now. Still looks good though. Sid Davies photo |
