BNSF Train H-NOHO
Title:  BNSF Train H-NOHO
Description:  When BNSF began serving New Orleans on 16 December 1996, its daily train H-NOHO (New Orleans-Houston) originated at CSX’s GENTIILLY YARD on the east side of the city. In this image on 11 January 1997, H-NOHO had just left GENTILLY with Santa Fe GP35’s 2870, 2951 and no cars. It had just crossed the Inner Harbor Navigation Canal drawbridge and was about to get onto the New Orleans Public Belt for the 22½-mile trip to home rails at the west end of the Huey P. Long Bridge. Along the way, it would pick up five cars at the NOPB COTTON WAREHOUSE YARD before continuing on to the BNSF’s AVONDALE YARD.

Description:  BNSF train H-NOHO (New Orleans-Houston) was heading west over the New Orleans Public Belt, between the French Quarter (on the left) and the Mississippi River. The two streetcar tracks had previously belonged to the Southern Pacific (on the left) and the CSX. The train had originated at the CSX’s GENTILLY YARD with GP35’s 2870, 2951 and no cars, and was heading for home rails at the west end of the Huey P. Long Bridge. Along the way, it would pick up five cars at the NOPB’s COTTON WAREHOUSE YARD.

A red signal greets us at the draw bridge, a regular occurance at this location due to salt water shorting out the track circuit. This train has just departed Pass Christian, MS. The train was unable to use the main line or the passing track because both of these were occupied by freights, so it is passing through the yard on 'ready track' RD2. The track on the right is RD1, with KCS No. 54; while the two tracks on the left are RD3 and RDT. The T is for TOTES, and this is where intermodal trains were assembled.

The two KCS SD's on track RD1 had arrived the previous day on KCS No. 53, which originated in Dallas; and would head back to the KCS later today on No. 54. The three UP units on track S23 came in on a transfer run.

Description:  View from the cab of Amtrak P32-8 507 on the westbound Gulf Coast Limited as it approaches the Industrial Canal Drawbridge at the south end of CSX Gentilly Yard. The train is on track S23, while on the right are the DRILL POCKET, the PASSING TRACK and the MAIN LINE. The track curving away on the extreme right is the New Orleans Public Belt line which serves the east side of the canal. The concrete beams over the tracks and the adjacent street are supports for the sliding floodgates.

On the other side of the tower is the main line of the Norfolk Southern, and beyond the signals is KCS train No. 53. No. 53 is led by GP40-2W 4705 and has been brought over from the KCS by an NS crew. It will sit here until the CSX sends a crew over from their Gentilly Yard to bring it in.

Description:  This view is from the cab of Amtrak B32-8WH 507 on train No. 23, the westbound GULF COAST LIMITED. The train is at CSX milepost 803.75, the most southwestern location on the railroad. Just ahead is the connection with the Norfolk Southern's BACK BELT, L&N Junction Tower (which closed in July 1972), and the Elysian Fields Avenue overpass. Passenger trains operating over the CSX into New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal use the NS for 3.5 miles, from here to East City Juction; and then operate over NOUPT track for the last four miles into the station. Notice the movable-point frogs on the crossing on the left.
