NS (WAB) Station, Moberly MO |
Description: |
The NS (ex WAB) station at Moberly MO in 1994. At one time the Moberly Division dispatcher offices occupied the 2d floor; the last passenger train called here in 1969. For whatever reason, after having visited Moberly many, many times over 20 years I finally stopped to shoot this building in 1994. It was heavily damaged by a tornado the following year and subsequently demolished. The adjacent REX structure still stands and holds a historical collection. |

The short life of the LTCO |
Description: |
When the N&W filed to abandon their line from Moberly to Des Moines in 1993, the Thomas Hill Power Plant was faced with a possible loss of rail service. The Bevier & Southern had already quit and the NW had the only active rail line to the plant, via a branch from Excello. The Lakeside%Transportation Company (LTCO) took over, hauling coal from Moberly to Thomas Hill, leasing four ex CR and B&M GP38s and a quartet of former IAIS (ICG) GP10s. The operation only lasted for ten months, Dec 1993 to Oct 1994, while the BN laid tracks over the old BVS roadbed. LTCO ceased ops on 2 Oct 94 and sent its units elsewhere. These are the last two units on the road, being repainted at Excello prior to movement. The short NW/WAB branch west was subsequently pulled up, as was the rest of the Des Moines line. |

Interurban Road |
Description: |
The grandly named Kansas City, Clay County & St. Joseph interurban line ran through the countryside of northwest Missouri between 1913 and 1933, providing frequent service with wine-red cars from downtown Kansas City to both St. Joseph and Excelsior Springs. The right-of-way between Ferrelview (near KCI Airport) and Dearborn in Platte County is now the appropriately named Interurban Road. This truss bridge structure was an original and crossed the Platte River near a point called Sharps. It has since been replaced by a more modern and wider, but much less interesting, concrete span. |
