Remnants of SOO Industrial Spurs at Amherst, WI |
Description: |
Remnants of a long disused spur coming down from the high line of the CN, former SOO, rails at Amherst, WI on 4 May '15. This spur used to cross Wilson St. at grade parallel to the elevated main line, visible behind the trees on the right, then split into three spurs to serve numerous local industries. One of the switch stands is visible background left. One of the spurs formed a large almost 180 degree arc that swung around to cross John St., George St., Main St. (along the north side of the Amherst Opera House) and over the dam of the Waupaca River to serve Jackson Milling Co. at the intersection of Mill St. and Pond St. |

WC 104 |
Description: |
WC 104 caboose decked out for its rededication ceremony at Smith Park, Menasha, WI on 16 May '15. The caboose was built by Haskell & Barker Car Co. at Michigan City, IN, and was delivered to the WC in Jan. '09. It was numbered SOO 99079 while on the Soo Line roster but was restored as WC 104 when it was presented to the Menasha Historical Society by Leonard Murray, president of Soo Line, in Jul. '71, during 100th anniversary celebration of founding of Wisconsin Central at Menasha. The protective shelter, designed to mimic a Soo Line depot, was donated by George Banta, Jr., a Menasha industrialist and railfan. The dedication ceremony was held on 18 Jun. '72. The caboose received a recent facelift and was rededicated during an appropriate ceremony earlier today. The shelter originally had station signs with SOO logos on both ends, but those signs have disappeared. A nice plaque was also part of the original display, but has also disappeared. |

Description: |
CN local heads southwest via former joint MILW/SOO rails enroute back to the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 21 May '15. The corporate headquarters of Plexus, partially visible on the right, occupies part of the site of the former P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill, which stood here for 132 years, the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874. Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006, the mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009. The vertical steel structure on the left used to carry steam pipes over the tracks to the paper mill from the defunct Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant). The ca. 1871 WC (later SOO) depot stood on the south (right) side of the tracks at the west end of Wisconsin Ave., right about where the middle of the train is. It was built on pilings in the south end of Little Lake Butte des Morts, these tracks were originally on a trestle over the water. All of the earth under and to the left (north) of these rails is landfill, deposited in the south end of the lake by the paper mills starting in the 1950s. That former landfill is now Arrowhead Park. The depot was converted to a freight house when a new depot was constructed on Sherry St. in 1891. The depot that stood here was demolished or moved between 1906 and 1913. |

Description: |
An indoor loading/unloading facility was recently constructed at Galloway Co., Inc. at Neenah, WI, as seen on 23 May '15. The new spur on the left and the derail were constructed ca. Sep. '14. The facility is served by CN via former C&NW rails. These rails used to be the C&NW mainline through Neenah and Menasha, but now end just short of S. Commercial St. The facility was started in 1927 as Neenah Milk Products, Galloway took it over in 1955. The facility has been expanded over the old right-of-way since the rails were pulled up. |

WSOR local approaches Fond du Lac Ave./Hwy. 44/Hwy. 23 as it hauls a baker's dozen of freight cars back to Horicon via former MILW rails at Ripon, WI on Memorial Day, 25 May 15. The 1913 Sanborn map depicts five tracks at this grade crossing, only this one remains. The MILW depot was just out of frame to left. Ripon Area Builders, in the background, is the former site of the 40,000 bu. CM&StP elevator. The MILW owned many elevators along its lines, and then leased them to the Milwaukee Elevator Co., if the information I have read is accurate. |

WSOR local passes a grain elevator and approaches E. Franklin St. as it hauls a baker's dozen of freight cars back to Horicon via former MILW rails at Waupun, WI on Memorial Day, 25 May 15. I believe the elevator is Farmers' Elevator, but I forgot to make note of the sign while I was there. It used to be operated by the Milwaukee Elevator Co. The MILW owned many elevators along its lines, and then leased them to the Milwaukee Elevator Co., if the information I have read is accurate. The depot stood here, between these two sets of tracks at E. Franklin St. Built ca. 1856 when Milwaukee & Horicon Railroad came to town. The depot was moved ca. 1981. Technically it still exists, but it is in deplorable condition: https://www.flickr.com/photos/11741544@N05/8239520147/. The station sign is at the far right of the photograph. |

WSOR local crosses the former junction with C&NW as it hauls a baker's dozen of freight cars back to Horicon via former MILW rails at Burnett, WI on Memorial Day, 25 May 15. The C&NW right-of-way is now the Wild Goose State Trail. The trail deviates from the right-of-way for a short distance from here because part of the C&NW rails are still in place to service Peachey Bros. Elevator, partially visible background left. Another part of their facility could be serviced by the MILW, out of frame to left, and that spur is also still in place. I am pretty sure the union depot stood right here, the grassy area foreground center. The station sign is at far right. |

IC 3138 and IC 3133 |
Description: |
A pair of IC Geeps are the motive power of CN local passing a seemingly idle grain elevator and approaching Hwy. 175 as it heads southeast with about 10 boxcars via former SOO rails at Byron, WI on Memorial Day, 25 May '15. They may have been preparing to service the nearby Quad Graphics facility. The train was halted out of frame to the right for a while and I was walking along the road to obtain a better vantage point for when it would eventually continue on. However, it moved out before I had hoped it would, hence the less-than-desirable perspective. |

Description: |
A CN container train crosses Viaduct Rd. as it heads southeast via former C&NW rails at Van Dyne, WI on Memorial Day, 25 May '15. There used to be four sets of tracks at this grade crossing, now there are two. The former SOO main line is still active, out of frame to the left, only a few scraps of their passing siding that crossed this road remain. The Wisconsin Power & Light tracks crossed this road out of frame to the right and ran along the other side of the Community AG Services, Inc., feed mill. |
