MNZX GRAND DOME |
| Description: |
Built in 1937 by P-S in Lot #6500 to Plan #7381 as SP 29 seat parlor-5 seat drawing room #3000, 1 of 2 such cars (#3000-#3001) built in that Lot, which was ordered in June 1936; these 2 cars were delivered in February 1937. In the early 1950s, as more and more dome cars were being ordered for Chicago-to-West Coast trains, the SP under the direction of President Donald Russell took the plunge, after having seen plans for Budd-built full domes for the AT&SF. Initially, orders for full domes were attached to previously-ordered Lots of full domes for the GN and Santa Fe. However, after looking at the dimensions for these planned cars, the SP became concerned about the side clearances on super-elevated curves along sidings and in double-tracked territory. As a result, Russell had the Budd orders cancelled, and instead instructed the SP shops to construct dome cars of their own design that would fit inside the clearances. With cooperation from Budd, which supplied the actual dome components in kit form, the shops used retired prewar cars built by P-S to construct 7 three-quarter dome club lounges (#3600-#3606) in 1954-1955, beginning with the prototype #3600 in 1954. Specifically, parlor #3000 was converted to dome #3604 in 1955. #3600 had 64 seats, #3601-#3604 had 78 seats, and #3605-#3606 had 74 seats. These cars were unique in the fact that there was no lower level beneath the dome section, due to the lower clearance of the domes. The #3600 was sold for scrap in 1970, and with the startup of Amtrak in 1971, 5 of the remaining cars (#3601-#3605) were leased to the new corporation, with some even being repainted to Amtrak colors but with the SP numbers. In 1974, these 5 cars were sold to Amtrak as #9370-#9374, the #3604 as #9373. Besides the #9370 which was wrecked in 1977, the other 4 cars were sold in 1981; the #9373 was retired in February 1981 and sold to J.R. Reed. It was later acquired by Dave Paradeau as the GRAND DOME for his Minnesota Zephyr Dinner Train. In 2012, Iowa Pacific acquired the Minnesota Zephyr consist, including the GRAND DOME. |

| Description: |
Built in 1929 by Pullman in Lot #6217 to Plan #3975C as the PALM LANE, a 3C-1DR sleeper-buffet lounge solarium observation, 1 of 8 such cars built in that Lot. 4 of these cars were built for the DIXIE FLYER with DIXIE-series names and delivered in late December 1928. The other 4 cars were built for the SEMINOLE LIMITED with PALM-series names and delivered in January 1929. One car, the PALM CITY, was wrecked in January 1947 at Perham, MN, on the NP. At the 12/31/1948 divestiture, 6 of these cars were sold to the PRR in the #854x-series. The PALM LANE was retained by Pullman until sold in August 1956 to James E. Strates Shows as the #2 SYRACUSE (1st). Strates later retired the car, and it went to the Central New York Chapter NRHS. In January 2013, the Chapter leased the SYRACUSE to Iowa Pacific on a long-term basis, and in return, IP is leasing a D&RGW business car to the Chapter, which has been put on display in place of the SYRACUSE. |

In 1947, 2 of these cars (#2188 and #2175) were rebuilt at the Burnside Shops to 48 seat club lounge round end observations #3305 MARDI GRAS and #3306 AUDUBON PARK respectively for the CITY OF NEW ORLEANS. In 1971, the #3305 was sold to Louis Saia, and later went to the New Orleans Chapter NRHS, resold in 1977 to the Roanoke Chapter, and acquired in 2010 by Iowa Pacific. The #3306 was also retired (exact year unknown) and sold to a private owner. Several years later, it was moved to a hunting lodge/ranch near McKinney, TX, and was acquired by Iowa Pacific in 2013. CB&Q owned 2 (#304-#305), SP&S owned 1 (#306), and NP owned 7 (#307-#313). In July 1957, NP ordered an eleventh "protection car", #314, which was built by Budd in Lot #9669-210 and delivered in December. In 1967, 6 of these cars (#307-#308, #311-#312, #314, and #304) were reconfigured to Lounge in the Sky dome buffet (club) lounge sleepers #375-#380 (Plan #9535A), the #304 was reconfigured to #380 in May. A buffet-bar service area was added with the removal of 2 of the 4 single bedrooms underneath the dome, with tables installed in the dome. This allowed NP to remove the 6 ex-CLUB series sleeper buffet lounge round end observations from the NORTH COAST LIMITED consist. In 1970, the unmodified cars were intended to be renumbered as BN #1440-#1444 and the Lounge in the Sky cars as #1450-#1455, but these numbers were not applied; however some cars were repainted to Cascade Green, but with the NP numbers. In 1971, Amtrak acquired these 11 cars as #9210-#9214 (unmodified cars) and #9220-#9225 (Lounge in the Sky cars), the #380 as #9225. The #9225 was stored and later sold in November 1985 to Ansco, which acquired the #9211 (ex-#306) at the same time, and also acquired from another party the #9212 (ex-#309). The #9211 was refurbished in 1987 as the CALIFORNIA in Rio Grande Aspen Gold & Silver, and the 2 other cars were sold; the #9225 to Dave Varilek, who planned to apply the name SILVER PILLOW to the car. In 2014, Iowa Pacific acquired 5 Budd cars from Varilek, including the #304. |

Built in 1937 by Budd in Lot #979 as AT&SF 28 seat club lounge-barber shop-shower-dormitory #1372 PICURIS, 1 of 6 such cas (#1371-#1376) built in that Lot, which was ordered in February 1937; cars were delivered in October 1937. The barber shop was later reconfigured to a steward's room. The other 5 cars built in this Lot were either wrecked or retired between 1965 and 1969, leaving only the PICURIS, which was sold in 1971 to Amtrak as #3380. The #3380 was retired in February 1981 and sold to the Memphis Transportation Museum, which renamed the car DYERSBURG. The DYERSBURG was one of several MTM cars acquired by Iowa Pacific.
