Built in 1955 by Budd in Lot #9646-155 as GN 24 seat dome 46 seat "long distance" leg rest chair #1324, 1 of 16 such cars built in that Lot, which was ordered in February 1954 for the 1955 EMPIRE BUILDER; cars were delivered between June and July 1955. GN owned 12 (#1320-#1331), SP&S owned 1 (#1332), and CB&Q owned 3 (#1333-#1335). These 16 cars were intended to be renumbered as BN #4600-#4615, but these numbers were not applied. In 1971, these cars were acquired by Amtrak as #9460-#9475, the #1324 as #9464. The #9464 was wrecked on 12/16/1976 in the consist of the eastbound #6 SAN FRANCISCO ZEPHYR at Ralston, NE. It was subsequently retired in November 1977 and sold in 1978 to the Building Leasing Corporation. The #9464 was owned by 2 additional parties before being sold to Dave Varilek, and in 2014, Iowa Pacific acquired 5 Budd cars from Varilek, including the #1324. |
