Here is an original photo by an unidentified photographer of an eastbound Pennsylvania Railroad freight train rounding the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania. Shown here (R to R) are PRR engines #9492 and two more "C-Liners" whose numbers are not recorded. All were built by by Fairbanks-Morse and rated at 1,600 horsepower each. #9492 was built in October of 1950 and retired in April of 1965 after just 15 years of revenue service. The date is an approximation. Roy Healey Collection; #7 of 9. |

8th Street. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 12 January 1964. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #7220, #9646, #9770-B, and #9492. #7220 is an EFS-17M built by EMD in 1957 and rated at 1,750 horsepower. #9646 and #9770-B are EF-15A's built by EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each; #9646 was built in 1950, but #9770-B was built in 1951. #9492 is an FF-16 built by Fairbanks-Morse in 1950 and rated at 1,600 horsepower. They are about to pass under the 8th Street Bridge in Juniata with a 100-car mixed-cargo freight train destined for Enola and points East. |
