BO 0-6-6-0 #2400 - Baltimore & Ohio |
| Description: |
Baltimore & Ohio 0-6-6-0 #2400 is an historic locomotive for many reasons starting with it being the first Mallet built in the US. Nicknamed "Old Maude" after a comic-strip mule, it was built to be a pusher loco for long strings of coal cars up steep grades on the B&O system. As a promotional item for the B&O, it went on display at the 1904 St Louis World's Fair. Alco-Schenectady built this unique loco in May of 1904 as B&O 0-6-6-0 #2400 (serial #27478, class O) in May of 1904 jointly designed by the B&O's James E Muhlfield and Alco's Carl J. Mellin. The success of this loco led to additional 30 revised 0-8-8-0 locos being built. In 1916, it was renumbered BO #7000. After its impact on railroading, it was still scrapped at Cumberland, MD in January of 1938. Specs - 56" drivers, impressive 235 psi boilter pressure, 20x32" high pressure cylinders, 32x32" low pressure cylinders, engine wt of 334,500 lb and tractive force of 71,500 lb. No photographer was listed for this historic photo from 1904. |

BO 4-6-2 #5243 - Baltimore & Ohio |
| Description: |
By this time in its life, Baltimore & Ohio 4-6-2 Pacific type #5243 (serial #55887, class P-6) is showing for overall wear. The loco was built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in December of 1922. Later in the 1920's, it was rebuilt with a Walschaert valve gear installed to improve efficiency and then reclassified as P-6a. The loco served for 33 years before being retired in 1955 and presumedly scrapped. Rebuilt specs - 74" drivers, 210 psi boiler pressure, 25x28" cylinders, engine wt of 288,600 lb and tractive force of 40,200 lb. Max Miller took this photo which is now in my rr collection. |
