Joe, the most common roadkill here in the Bitterroot Valley in western MT is deer, primarily whitetails. BNSF and MRL trains often hit them, too, from what I hear, statewide. I'd have never expected to see them around Gary, IN, but pictures don't lie. You were sure in the right place at the right time! Great photo, my friend!

Ron, there are a lot of deer in the Pine Junction area (which CSX calls Curtis). Lots of woods, wetlands, etc. That deer is heading for a state nature preserve just south of the tracks. The freight may not even be moving (it's westbound on the CSX main; trains often hold there for a considerable length of time). :)

Mike, the train was stopped, but not for long. The conductor even got out for a minute to take a picture of the deer.
