Although it appears as this is an 0-8-0 #3407 working the yard, it actually is still CP 2-8-0 #3407 just with its pilot truck removed temporarily. When the need arose for an 0-8-0 yard switcher, the Saskatoon shop would remove the front truck for use as a yard switcher. The tale goes that the shop would keep the pilot truck close by in case corporate inspectors would appear or if a road loco was needed. The loxo was built by the Montrail Locomotive Works in November of 1904 originally as CP 2-8-0 #1607 but later renumbred in October of 1912 to #3407. It lasted into the 1950's. This is a James Bowie photo. |
