Altoona Action. Here is the second of two successive duplicate 35mm color slides via Al Chio-ne that were taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1963. The photographer is not identified. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8669, #8668, and #8679. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8669 was constructed in March of 1958, #8668 in February of 1958, and #8679 in April of 1958. They're serving as tail-end pushers for a mixed-cargo freight train that's heading up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they'll be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona for yet another helper-pusher run up "The Mountain." Note the "Through Service" cabin car with the yellow cupola. |
