World first combined narrow/standard gauge train  Contributor's Pick!
The bogie of the GoldenPass Express changes the track gauge within a few seconds and with the passengers on board. A total of eight minutes are required, including the locomotive change and the corresponding checks. However, changing track width and height is not the only hurdle. There is an electrical voltage difference between the MOB and BLS networks: 900 volts (direct current) on the metre-gauge network and 15 kV / 16.7 Hz (alternating current) on the standard gauge network. This requires a change of locomotives. They do not have variable bogies. In Zweisimmen, for example, the BLS locomotive hands over the wagon convoy to the MOB locomotive.
