Former SP 9721, now patched UP 1124, is the sole power on this day’s “Weyerhaeuser” local. Despite it being 2021 there’s more than one notable holdover from the Southern Pacific on the train today. Most obviously is the scarlet and gray paint with SP speed lettering still dodging UP’s paint shed on UP 1124. The less obvious one in this picture is the string of four former Golden West Service boxcars. Another holdover is the name the crews and dispatchers use for this daytime Springfield local, the “Weyerhaeuser.” This local was called that back in the SP days and the name is still used today despite that mill now being owned by International Paper. The nighttime Springfield local job, which uses the same power as the daytime job, still goes by the old SP name of “Vaughn Dougren” as well, despite no longer going to either Vaughn or Dougren anymore. The Rosboro mill in the background has also changed little since the SP days. |
