Built by Lima in May of 1944 as PM 2-8-4 Berkshire #1231 (serial #8465, class N-2), the loco served first the Pere Marquette Railway and then in 1947 when PM merged officially into the C&O, it served C&O (never renumbered) until written off the roster in January of 1958. Final specs - 70" drivers (upgraded from 69" in 1947), impressive 245 psi boiler pressure, 26x34" cylinders, engine weight of 442,500 lb, tractive effort of 69,350 lb. No photographer was listed for the photo. It sat in the New Buffalo, MI, scrap line until meeting up with the scrapper's torch in 1961. |
