A CN local passes SOO 736 while traversing Telulah Park as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI, on 5 Jul. '21. The local was returning from Kimberly and Combined Locks. SOO 736 was donated to the City by John Mason Balliet. He also paid for construction of a temporary spur off the branch line to get the locomotive into the park, as well as a fence erected later to deter vandals. The locomotive arrived on 14 Nov. '59. When asked why he did it, he said, "so that children would know what [a steam engine] looked like." He owned an insurance agency, but railroads were a hobby. He served as a director for Missouri Pacific, Michigan Central, Lake Erie & Eastern, and Pittsburgh & Lake Erie railroads. |
