Bernie Feltman General Broom and pick under headlight are awesome!! 11/16/2020 8:47:40 AM
Tom Beckett General Interesting these units should be positioned as they are. They were set up for long hood forward operation on the LIRR. 11/18/2020 4:23:06 AM
Tom Beckett General The short hood housed a steam generator-you can see the stack just barely poking up above the headlight. Also of note, the two pieces of metal attached to the hood between the horns and the cab. These are smoke deflectors, designed to create air flow that would lift the exhaust-which as you know with Alcos could be significant-over the cab and away from the crew. These engines were from the first order of C 420's from 1963, and were delivered in the gray/orange "sweep" scheme that LIRR used in the 1964 Worlds Fair era. Passenger cars had a similar scheme of gray with an orange window band. BTW, that's a nice park they have there in Huntington now. Otherwise you'd never know there was another railroad in town. 11/18/2020 4:28:02 AM
