KCS Train No. 53
Kansas City Southern train 53 - running as Extra 657 South - was crossing the entrance to the Airline Drive-In Theater about a mile from its destination at New Orleans' WEST YARD. The second unit was F9Am 4053, and when this photo was taken, F-units and older geeps had recently began running with SD's on the line into New Orleans. I was told this was a fuel conservation measure, but it also released SD's for use elsewhere on the railroad. Before long, the usual power became a trio of newer geeps or a GP-slug-GP set.
