Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide by an unidentified photographer that was taken near Washington, DC, during September of 1964. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #4864, a GG-1 (2-C-C-2) built in Juniata during January of 1938 and rated at 4,620 horsepower. In this context, it has just departed Washington's Union Station with the northbound "Manhattan Limited." This shot also shows the relative ineffectiveness of the PRR's unmanned locomotive washing machines: good for flat sides, less so for curved surfaces. (Tchowee"; #14 of 27) |
