Originally built as Rutland 200 by Alco-Schenectady in April 1902 (c/n 26413), it renumbered to New York Central & Hudson River #2040 in 1904, and became Rutland #40 in 1914, F-12 class, superheated in August 1919 and reclassed F12a, retired in April 1951.
