Restored cosmetically to one of its paint schemes while it served on the American Freedom Train, this former Reading 4-8-4 T1 class locomotive #2101 actually started out as a 1923 Baldwin built 2-8-0 Consolidation. Needing more power, the Reading Shops (with help from Baldwin) converted 30 2-8-0 Consolidations into 4-8-4 Northern style locos. The locomotive was pulled from the Streigel Supply Company (scrap yard) and remarkably overhauled in just 30 days back in early 1975. After two years of serving as one of the American Freedom Train steam locomotives, it was retire and converted to the Chessie Steam Special which ran another two years. A disasterous roundhouse fire ended her active career. She was donated to the B&O Museum where she underwent cosmetic restoration. Unknown photographer. |
