PRR 9730, BF-16, 1957
ARB. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by David R. Sweetland that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 17 July 1957. Prominent here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #9730 and a Shark "B" unit whose number is not recorded. Both were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. #9730 is a BF-16 built in February of 1951, rated at 1,600 horsepower, and retired in July of 1966 after just 15 years of revenue service. They're about to pass under Juniata's 8th Street Bridge with a mixed-cargo freight train on their way to 4th Street, where they'll stop for a crew change before proceeding up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. Partially visible at the left is PRR engine #7602, an ES-17M built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,750 horsepower.

Robert Anderson General A lot in this photo. Matched pair of sharks, new SD's, wagon top cars, heavy duty well manicured track and are we looking at air activated switch machines? The old autos back there don't hurt. Thanks for sharing this. 8/28/2018 3:13:50 PM
