PRR 5699, K-5, 1952         
Dziobko. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by John Dziobko, Jr., that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 25 July 1952. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5699, a K-5 (4-6-2) "Pacific" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during March of 1929 and retired in September of 1953 after 24 years of faithful service. It's just passed under the 12th Street Foot Bridge, and is backing-up toward the 14th Street Interlocking. Visible in the background is the shadow of the trainshed at the Altoona Passenger Station. Thomas C. Ayers General According to Robert Hess ~> "This is a photo of one of the two K5 engines, Nos. 5698 and 5699. I can't decipher the number on the cab but No. 5698 was retired in 10-1952 and No. 5699 in 9-1953, so given the date it could be either one of them. Note that the engine has a Worthington feedwater heater on the smokebox behind the stack. Also there is no bell mounted in the usual location on top of the boiler. These two features mean that this has to be a K5. When the two engines were modernized with the generator and headlight positions reversed and the large platform mounted on the smokebox front, the bell was relocated from under the headlight bracket to a bracket on the bottom of the large platform, so it is not visible in this photo." 2/12/2021 9:15:28 PM
Thomas C. Ayers General Robert Hess Continues ~> "A photo of No. 5698 taken circa 1948 shows the engine had received one of the smaller "bullet" style headlights with the rounded back. Four photos of No. 5699 taken in 1948-49 all show this engine retained the original (slightly larger) diameter headlight with the flat back. So the John Dziobko, Jr. photo has to be 5699. No. 5699 originally was built with Caprotti valve gear but this was replaced by Walschaert valve gear in December 1936 - as shown in the Dziobko photo." 2/13/2021 7:43:24 AM
