PRR 5898, E-8A, 1987
Here is an original 35mm color slide by M.E. Brouse that was taken just East of the 24th Street Bridge in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 1 November 1987. Shown here (R to L) are former Pennsylvania Railroad engines #5898 and #5706. Both are E-8A's built by GM-EMD and rated at 2,250 horsepower each; #5898 was built in March of 1951, while #5706 was built in October of 1952. At the time this photo was taken, they were owned by the Blue Mountain & Reading Railroad and are seen pulling the 17-car "Horseshoe Curve Excursion" down the Allegheny Mountains and will soon stop at the Altoona Passenger Station before returning to Hamburg.
